Waitomo Glowworm Caves★★
The Waitomo Glowworm Caves (2.5 hours south of Auckland, 1 hour west of Rotorua) host one of New Zealand's most magical natural spectacles: millions of Arachnocampa luminosa — glowworms (actually the larvae of a mosquito species found only in New Zealand and some caves in Australia), which create a bluish-green bioluminescent light in the eternal darkness of the limestone caves to attract tiny insects as prey.
The Cave Experiences
Classic Glowworm Cave Tour (55 NZD, 45 minutes): You walk through the Cathedral Cave (with an 18-meter-high, dome-like ceiling full of stalactites) and then glide silently in a boat over an underground river through the Glowworm Grotto. Above you: a "starry sky" of thousands of glowworms casting their bluish-green light on the still, black water. Absolute silence, absolute darkness, only the glowworms shine. It is surreal, otherworldly, and emotional — many visitors are moved to tears.
Black Water Rafting (Legendary Black Water Rafting, from 145 NZD, 3 hours): You jump into the underground water with an inner tube, swim through narrow passages, abseil into the depths, and float under the glowworm sky through the darkness — like an astronaut in space, only wet. The most intense cave experience (the 5-hour "Black Abyss" tour for 235 NZD includes additional abseiling, climbing, and ziplining).
Ruakuri Cave Tour (75 NZD, 2 hours): The longest and most spectacular of the three main caves. You enter the cave via a spiral ramp (no stairs, wheelchair accessible!), walk through chambers full of stalactites and stalagmites, cross underground streams, and see glowworms in even greater density than on the Classic Tour. Less visited and more detailed — the best tour for those who want more than the standard 45 minutes.
Waitomo is perfect as a stop between Auckland and Rotorua — or as a combo day trip with Hobbiton (both are in the Waikato, 1 hour apart). The region also has the Ruakuri Bushwalk (30 minutes, free) — an atmospheric trail through lush bush to a natural cave entrance.
💡 Tipp
Do not book the Classic Tour for 12:00–14:00 — that's when the big tour buses from Auckland arrive. The first tour in the morning (9:00) or late afternoon (16:00+) is much quieter. For the most intense experience: Black Water Rafting. For the best value for money: Ruakuri Cave. Combo tickets for multiple caves save 15–20%. Bring warm clothing — the caves are a constant 15°C.
