Best Travel Time
New Zealand is located in the Southern Hemisphere — the seasons are opposite to those in Europe. The climate is maritime and changeable: "Four seasons in one day" is not a joke but a New Zealand reality.
The Seasons
- New Zealand Summer (Dec–Feb): Best travel time for most activities. 20–30 °C in the north, 15–25 °C in the south. Longest days (light until 9:30 PM). Peak season: Great Walks fully booked, campervans expensive. Kiwi Christmas and New Year holidays — beaches and campsites crowded.
- New Zealand Autumn (Mar–May): Excellent travel time! Stable weather, fewer tourists, golden autumn colors (especially Otago, Arrowtown). Great Walks still accessible. Grape harvest in Marlborough (March).
- New Zealand Winter (Jun–Aug): Skiing on the South Island (Queenstown, Wanaka, Mt Hutt). North Island mild (10–15 °C). Milford Sound less visited but spectacular snowy landscape. Short days.
- New Zealand Spring (Sep–Nov): Lambing season! Wildflowers, snow-capped mountains, and green valleys. Few tourists, good prices. Weather still changeable, especially in the south.

Achtung
The South Island is cool even in summer — in the mountains, it can drop to 5 °C at night. Pack layers and a waterproof jacket, no matter what month you travel. "Four seasons in one day" is a reality in New Zealand.
