Savings Tips
- DOC Campsites: The Department of Conservation operates over 200 basic campsites near national parks — from 8 NZD/Night, some free. Beautifully located, but without power.
- Countdown & New World: Self-catering is the cheapest option. Both supermarket chains have weekly specials and club cards for discounts.
- Relocation Deals: Campervan companies need vehicles transferred between cities — from 1 NZD/Day! Platforms: Transfercar, Stand-by Relocs.
- BBQ Areas: Almost every holiday park and many public places have free BBQ grills (electric or gas). Grill local lamb from the supermarket — cheaper and better than some restaurants.
- Shoulder Season (March–May): Campervans 30–50% cheaper than in December/January, accommodations also reduced, fewer tourists, stable autumn weather, and spectacular foliage (especially Arrowtown and Central Otago).
- Flybuys & Airpoints: Free customer cards from supermarket chains (Countdown: OneCard, New World: Clubcard) offer weekly discounts on staples — worth it from the first week.
- Free New Zealand: Many of the best experiences cost nothing: Huka Falls, Cathedral Cove Walk, Hooker Valley Track, Peninsula Walkway in Kaikōura, Te Papa Museum in Wellington, Christchurch Art Gallery, all beaches, all DOC trails (only huts cost). New Zealand is one of the countries where you can experience incredible things with little money.

💡 Tipp
The exchange rate is approximately 1 € ≈ 1.78 NZD (as of 2026). Credit cards are accepted almost everywhere — even for small amounts. Contactless payment is standard. However, carry some cash (50–100 NZD) for DOC huts and small farm stands. The biggest savings tip: travel in the shoulder season (March–May) — 30–50% cheaper with a better experience.
