Hudson Yards & Observation Decks
Hudson Yards
New York's newest district (opened in 2019) on the west side of Manhattan: skyscrapers, luxury shopping, and two spectacular attractions:
- The Vessel: The honeycomb-shaped staircase monument (16 stories, 154 flights, 2,500 steps) was the landmark of Hudson Yards. Currently: check the status (was temporarily closed). The architecture is impressive from the outside.
- Edge: The highest outdoor observation deck in the western hemisphere — 335 meters above the city, with a glass floor and an angled glass wall to lean against. Admission: from $44. For the fearless: City Climb — climb the outside of the building with a harness, 365 meters above the ground (from $185).
New Observation Decks
New York has a boom in observation decks — besides Empire State and Top of the Rock, there are now:
- One World Observatory: In the One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower), 381 meters. The SkyPod elevator shows an animation of New York's development (47 seconds to 102 floors!). Admission: from $43.
- Summit One Vanderbilt: Next to Grand Central — interactive art installation with mirrored rooms and an outdoor glass box 335 meters above the city (Ascent). Instagrammable and spectacular. Admission: from $42.
- SUMMIT One Vanderbilt Ascent: Transparent glass boxes protruding from the building — you virtually float above the street. From $54.
💡 Tipp
If you only want to visit ONE observation deck: Top of the Rock at sunset — the best overall view (Empire State + Central Park + Downtown). If you're seeking thrills: Edge or Summit. If you love icons: Empire State Building at night. All are worth their price.
