Coziness — A Life Philosophy Rather Than Laziness

Coziness is perhaps the most difficult German word to translate — and nowhere is it lived as much as in Austria. It means far more than "cozy" in the sense of comfortable. It is a way of life: taking time, enjoying the moment, fostering sociability, not rushing.

Coziness is evident in hours spent in a coffee house over a single melange and three newspapers. In the Sunday morning gathering at the wine tavern with friends. In "leading Schmäh" — relaxed chatting without aim or time pressure. In the fact that Austrians are reluctant to have appointments on a sunny afternoon.

For Germans, who are often considered efficient and direct, this can be irritating. But don't confuse coziness with slowness or inefficiency — Austria is one of the most productive countries in Europe. It's more about the priority of the human: Breaking off a conversation because the clock is ticking is considered impolite. The right attitude: be relaxed, let yourself drift, appreciate the moment.

The opposite of coziness is the grant — a specifically Viennese form of chronic dissatisfaction, which is not considered impolite but authentic. A grumpy waiter in a Viennese coffee house is part of the inventory like the marble table. It's not a personal insult — it's style.

💡 Tipp

If someone in Vienna tells you "Passt schon," it can mean anything — from genuine satisfaction to resigned acceptance. The tone decides. When in doubt: smile and ask.
