Tipping
In Austria, tipping is customary and expected — but less formalized than in the USA. When paying, you say the amount to be rounded up.
Usual Amounts
- Restaurant: 5–10% of the bill. Round up to 40 € for a 37 € bill, to 90–95 € for an 85 € bill. When paying, say: "Make it 40" or "Stimmt so"
- Coffee house: Round up to the next full euro or add 50 cents more
- Taxi: Round up to the next euro or 5–10%
- Hotel: Porter 1–2 € per piece of luggage, chambermaid 1–2 € per day
- Hairdresser: 5–10%
- Skiing: Ski instructor at the end of the course 5–10 € per day, not mandatory
How to Tip
In Austria, you give the tip directly to the waiter when paying — not leaving it on the table (considered rude). If paying by card, state the desired amount including the tip before the waiter enters the amount. Or pay by card and give the tip separately in cash.
💡 Tipp
The phrase "Stimmt so" when paying means the change is the tip. If you want to pay the exact amount, say "Getrennt, bitte" or state the exact amount. Never just throw the coins on the table — this is considered an insult.
