Mondsee★★
The Mondsee is one of the warmest lakes in the Salzkammergut (up to 27°C in summer!) and is picturesquely located at the foot of the Drachenwand (1,176 m). The town of the same name, Mondsee (3,800 inhabitants), is famous for its Basilica St. Michael — the yellow baroque church served as the filming location for the wedding scene in the movie "The Sound of Music" (1965) and has since attracted American and Asian tourists.
Quieter and less crowded than Lake Wolfgang, Mondsee is ideal for families: shallow shores, warm water, good infrastructure. The pile dwellings of Mondsee (circa 3,800 BC) gave the archaeological "Mondsee culture" its name.
💡 Tipp
The via ferrata on the Drachenwand (difficulty C/D) offers the most spectacular view of Lake Mondsee — but only for experienced climbers! A lighter alternative is the hiking trail to Schober (1,328 m) from St. Lorenz with a panoramic view.

★★ Basilica St. Michael
The baroque church (originally 15th century, baroque in the 18th century) with its bright yellow facade became world-famous as the filming location for the wedding scene in "The Sound of Music". Inside: magnificent baroque altars, ceiling frescoes, and a solemn atmosphere. The church belonged to the Benedictine monastery Mondsee (748–1791), one of the oldest monasteries in Austria.

★ Pile Dwelling and Local Museum
In the former monastery next to the basilica: Finds from the Neolithic pile dwellings (circa 3,800 BC), which gave the "Mondsee culture" its name. Beautiful ceramics, stone tools, and a model of the pile dwelling settlement.

★★ Swimming at Mondsee
Alpenseebad Mondsee — Spacious lakeside bath with lawns, diving tower, water slide, and beach volleyball. The water reaches a pleasant 24–27°C in July/August. Admission: €6 (adults), €3 (children). Free lake access at several natural shore spots south of the town.
