Dry Season vs. Rainy Season
Dry Season / Verano (December–April)
The clear recommendation for most travelers, especially for a round trip across all regions:
- December–February: Perfect weather — sunny, dry, pleasant temperatures (26–32°C). The best time for beach, hiking, and sightseeing. High season, but Panama is never as crowded as Thailand or Bali.
- March–April: Still dry and sunny, but the hottest period of the year (up to 35°C in Panama City). Semana Santa (Easter week) is the busiest domestic travel time — Panamanians flock to the sea, hotels near the beach are fully booked.
Rainy Season / Invierno (May–November)
Not as dramatic as it sounds! The rain usually falls as a heavy but short afternoon shower lasting 2–3 hours. Mornings are often brilliantly sunny. The rainforest is at its greenest and most vibrant, prices are significantly lower (30–50% savings on hotels), and tourist numbers are fewer.
- May–July: Transition into the rainy season, first showers in the afternoon. Still good for travel.
- August: Often a "little dry season" (veranillo) on the Pacific side with some sunny weeks.
- September–November: Heaviest rainfall on the Pacific side. BUT: The Caribbean side (Bocas, San Blas) now has its driest phase!
Whale Watching
Humpback whales come to the Pacific coast (Isla Coiba, Gulf of Chiriquí) from July to October. Best time: August and September — a magical natural spectacle.
💡 Tipp
The big insider tip: Travel in September or October, when the Caribbean side (Bocas del Toro, San Blas) has its driest phase, the Pacific whales are present, and prices are at their lowest everywhere. You almost have Panama to yourself.
