Saving Tips
Panama doesn't have to be expensive if you plan cleverly. The best strategies for budget-conscious travel:
- Take advantage of the rainy season: From May to November, hotels are 30–50% cheaper. Since the rain usually falls only in the afternoons, you still have beautiful mornings. Especially Bocas and San Blas are dry AND affordable in September/October.
- Fondas instead of restaurants: Eat like the locals outside tourist zones. Lunch costs $3–5 instead of $15–25 in a restaurant.
- Uber instead of taxi: In Panama City, Uber is often 30–50% cheaper than regular taxis, and you avoid price negotiations.
- Long-distance bus instead of domestic flight: The bus from Panama City → David costs $15–20 (6–7h), the flight $70–120. With a limited budget, the bus ride is worth it — the buses are modern and air-conditioned.
- Compare San Blas trips: Prices vary greatly ($150–350 for 2 days/1 night). Book in hostels in Panama City — they often have the best deals and know reliable providers.
- Use hostel kitchen: Supermarkets (El Rey, Super 99) are inexpensive. Cooking for yourself saves a lot, especially for breakfast.
- Drinking water: Tap water in Panama City is drinkable — refill your water bottle instead of buying expensive bottled water.
- Alcohol in the supermarket: A six-pack of Balboa costs $4–5 in the supermarket, a single beer in the bar $3–5. For Bocas party nights: pre-drink from the supermarket.
