Rynek Główny & Old Town
★★★ Rynek Główny — The largest medieval market square in Europe
At 200 × 200 meters (40,000 m²), Rynek Główny is the largest medieval market square in Europe — and one of the most beautiful. Since 1257, it has been the heart of Krakow: surrounded by Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque townhouses, churches, and palaces. Day and night, life pulses here: flower sellers, horse-drawn carriages, street musicians, and thousands of people under the watchful gaze of St. Mary's Basilica towers.
★★★ Sukiennice (Cloth Hall)
The most distinctive building on the Rynek: The Gothic Cloth Hall from the 14th century (Renaissance reconstruction in the 16th century) stretches across the entire center of the square. On the ground floor: souvenir shops with amber, wood carvings, and Polish handicrafts. On the upper floor: the Gallery of 19th-Century Polish Painting with works by Matejko, Malczewski, and Wyspiański.
Gallery: 20 PLN (5€). Tue–Sat 10:00–18:00, Sun 10:00–16:00. Mon closed.
★★★ Kościół Mariacki (St. Mary's Basilica)
The Gothic St. Mary's Basilica (14th century) with its two unequal towers dominates the north side of the Rynek. The highlight inside: the Veit Stoss Altar (Ołtarz Wita Stwosza) — the largest Gothic wooden altar in Europe (13 × 11 meters!), carved between 1477 and 1489 from limewood. The figures are life-sized, the colors original. A masterpiece of world art.
From the higher tower (82 meters), the Hejnał sounds every hour — a trumpet melody that abruptly stops mid-tune. Legend has it that in 1241, a tower watchman was struck by a Tatar arrow as he warned of the attack. This tradition has been continued for centuries.
Plac Mariacki 5. 25 PLN (6€). Mon–Sat 11:30–18:00, Sun 14:00–18:00. Altar opening daily at 11:50 — worth seeing!
★★ Rynek Underground (Podziemia Rynku)
Beneath the market square lies an underground museum: Excavations uncovered remnants of medieval streets, workshops, and cemeteries. The multimedia exhibition brings 13th-century Krakow to life. One of Poland's most innovative museums.
Rynek Główny 1. 28 PLN (7€). Tue–Sun 10:00–20:00 (Tue until 16:00). Tickets limited — book online!
★★ Collegium Maius
The oldest university building in Poland (15th century) and part of the Jagiellonian University — the second oldest university in Central Europe (founded in 1364). Nikolaus Copernicus studied here! The Gothic courtyard with arcades is freely accessible, and the museum displays historical instruments, including a globe considered one of the oldest depictions of America.
Ul. Jagiellońska 15. Guided tour: 15 PLN (3.50€). Mon–Sat, limited group size — book in advance!
