★★★ Auschwitz-Birkenau (KL Auschwitz)

66 kilometers west of Krakow lies the site where humanity wrote its darkest chapter. Auschwitz-Birkenau was the largest Nazi concentration and extermination camp — over 1.1 million people were murdered here, the overwhelming majority European Jews.

The visit consists of two parts:

  • Auschwitz I (Main Camp): The original camp with the infamous barracks, the gate "Arbeit macht frei," the gas chambers, and the crematorium. The exhibition shows mountains of suitcases, shoes, glasses, and hair of the murdered.
  • Auschwitz II — Birkenau: 3 km away, the vast extermination camp with the iconic gatehouse and tracks leading directly to death. The sheer size (170 hectares!) is overwhelming.

Oświęcim. Free entry, but reservation required (auschwitz.org). Guided tour: 75 PLN (17€, 3.5 hours). Buses from Krakow main station (1.5h, 15 PLN). Organized tours from Krakow: 120–160 PLN (28–37€). Open daily, times vary by season.

★★★ Kopalnia Soli Wieliczka (Salt Mine)

Just 14 km southeast of Krakow lies one of the most astonishing structures ever created by humans: The Wieliczka Salt Mine, in operation since the 13th century and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1978.

The tourist route leads 135 meters underground through 20 chambers over 3 kilometers. The absolute highlight: the Chapel of St. Kinga (Kaplica Św. Kingi) — an underground church space, entirely carved from salt. Altar, chandeliers, reliefs, even the floor — all salt. The chandeliers are made of salt crystals. It's breathtaking.

Other highlights: underground lakes, the Copernicus monument made of salt, and an exhibition on the history of salt mining.

Ul. Daniłowicza 10, Wieliczka. 110 PLN (25€, guided tour, 2–3 hours). German-speaking tours available. S-Bahn or bus from Krakow (30 min.). Daily 8:00–17:00 (summer until 19:00). Book online!

★★ Zakopane & High Tatras

Zakopane is located 100 km south of Krakow at the foot of the High Tatras — the world's smallest high mountain range with alpine character. The "Winter Capital of Poland" is Poland's most popular mountain resort:

  • Krupówki: The pedestrian main street with wooden architecture, restaurants, souvenir shops, and Oscypek sellers (smoked sheep cheese)
  • Gubałówka Cable Car: Panoramic view over the entire Tatra range. Single ride 30 PLN (7€)
  • Kasprowy Wierch (1,987 m): By cable car to the summit — panoramic view to Slovakia in clear weather. Ski area in winter
  • Morskie Oko: The "Eye of the Sea" — a crystal-clear mountain lake surrounded by 2,000-meter peaks. One of the most beautiful lakes in the Tatras. 9 km walk from the parking lot (2–3h) or by horse-drawn carriage

Buses from Krakow main station every 30 min. (2–2.5h, 15–25 PLN). Also by FlixBus. As a day trip or with overnight stay — Zakopane has hundreds of guesthouses from 100 PLN/night.

Achtung

Auschwitz-Birkenau is a memorial site — not a tourist spot. Behave respectfully: wear appropriate clothing, avoid loud talking, selfies, and cheerful photos are inappropriate. Prepare emotionally: the visit is profoundly disturbing, especially the hair, shoes, and suitcases of the murdered. Children under 14 are not recommended.
