Monsaraz is one of those villages that takes your breath away. Perched on a narrow hill ridge, this medieval fortress village overlooks the vast Alqueva Reservoir — Europe's largest artificial lake. The view at sunset, when the water glows golden and the plain fades into infinity, is one of the most beautiful moments Portugal has to offer.

The village itself consists of little more than a single cobbled main street, lined with whitewashed houses with granite frames, a 13th-century castle at the end, and a handful of restaurants. Fewer than 150 inhabitants live in Monsaraz. There is no supermarket, no bank, no cinema. There is silence, history, and this incredible view.

The Castle (Castelo de Monsaraz) offers a 360-degree panoramic view from its walls. Entry is free. In the courtyard, there is a small bullring — one of the few preserved medieval arenas in Portugal. In the tower, a small museum on the history of the place.

In recent years, Monsaraz has established itself as one of the best places in Europe for stargazing. The Alqueva region was certified as the world's first "Starlight Tourism Destination" in 2011. The low light pollution makes the night sky here breathtaking. Several providers in the village offer guided stargazing with telescopes (€20–30/person).

The Alqueva Reservoir below the village invites you to swim, kayak, and boat. On the shore, there are small sandy beaches (Praia Fluvial de Monsaraz) and a boat rental. In summer, the water reaches a pleasant 24–26°C.

💡 Tipp

Stay in the village — for example, at Casa Dom Nuno (double rooms from €70) right on the main street overlooking the lake. In the evening, when the day-trippers have left, the entire village is yours. The starry sky over Monsaraz is one of the best in all of Europe. Book the Dark Sky Alqueva Tour for stargazing (€25/person, about 2 hours).
