Fira & the Center

Fira (Φηρά, also spelled Thira) is Santorini's main town and the island's commercial, cultural, and nightlife center. Situated on the caldera rim at an altitude of 260 meters, Fira offers breathtaking views of the caldera, the Nea Kameni volcano, and — in clear weather — as far as Crete. Here, you will find the island's museums, restaurants, bars, souvenir shops, and the best nightlife.

The Gold Street (Ypapantis Street) is Fira's most famous promenade: a narrow, car-free alley right on the caldera rim, lined with jewelry shops, boutiques, cafes, and restaurants with terraces over the abyss. In the evening, it transforms into a lively promenade where cocktails and sunset views mingle.

Museums: The Archaeological Museum displays finds from Akrotiri and the geometric period — including the famous Minoan vases. The Museum of Prehistoric Thera houses the original frescoes from Akrotiri (the "Boxing Boys," the "Antelopes," the "Fishermen Frescoes") — absolutely worth seeing, even if the exhibition is small. The Megaro Gyzi Museum in a Venetian palace showcases engravings of Santorini before the 1956 earthquake.

The cable car connects Fira with the old port (Skala) 220 meters below, where the cruise ship tenders dock. Alternatively: 587 steps on foot — or by donkey (controversial, consider animal welfare). At the old port, the excursion boats to the Nea Kameni volcano depart.

Nightlife: Fira has the best bars and clubs in Santorini — from chic caldera cocktail bars (Tango, PK Cocktail Bar) to party clubs (Koo, Enigma). The night starts late (after 11 PM) and ends at sunrise. Much livelier and younger than elegant Oia.

The hike from Fira to Oia along the caldera rim is the most beautiful hike in the Cyclades — and one of the most iconic in all of Greece. 10 kilometers, 3–4 hours of walking time, and a continuous, breathtaking panoramic view of the caldera, the volcano, and the open sea.

The Route

Start: Fira (at the northern edge of town, towards Firostefani). The path leads along the caldera rim through Firostefani (30 min.), Imerovigli (1h), then over the Skaros Rock (optional detour), further through open landscape, and finally to Oia (3–4h). The path is well-marked (blue-white dots) but not paved — sturdy shoes are recommended. It goes up and down, the most strenuous section is between Imerovigli and Oia (dusty, steep, little shade).

Highlights along the way

• Firostefani: The village "on the edge" with the iconic blue-domed church Agios Theodori (Instagram motif number 2 after Oia). Caldera view at eye level, quieter than Fira.
• Imerovigli: The highest point of the caldera (310 m) with the nickname "Balcony of the Aegean." From here, you have the widest view over the entire caldera. Perfect place for a coffee break.
• Skaros Rock: The ruin of the medieval fortress on a dramatic rocky outcrop. The detour to Skaros takes an extra 30 minutes and requires surefootedness — but it's worth it for the 360-degree panorama.
• Open Landscape: Between Imerovigli and Oia, the path becomes lonelier and wilder — dry earth, thistle fields, wind, and the caldera always beside you. Here, Santorini's rugged, volcanic side is revealed.

In the middle of the caldera lies Nea Kameni (Νέα Καμένη, "New Burnt") — a young volcanic island that has only emerged from the sea in the last 2,000 years. The last eruption was in 1950, and the island is geologically highly active: fumaroles emit sulfur fumes, the ground is hot, and seismologists monitor the volcano around the clock. A visit to Nea Kameni is an encounter with the mighty forces that created — and nearly destroyed — Santorini.

The Boat Tour: Excursion boats depart daily from the old port of Fira (Skala) or from Athinios. The standard tour (25–45€, 3–5 hours) includes: a trip to the volcano, ascent to the crater rim (about 30 minutes, rocky path, sturdy shoes required), viewing of the fumaroles (yellow sulfur crystals, hot steam), and often a stop at the hot springs of Palea Kameni — an area where volcanically heated sulfur water flows into the sea and invites bathing (caution: the water stains swimsuits rust-brown!).

Extended tours additionally include a visit to Thirassia (lunch in Manolas) and a return trip along the caldera at sunset. The Sunset Volcano Cruise (from 50€) combines volcano, hot springs, Thirassia, and sunset views on the return trip — the most popular tour on Santorini.

Geology: The caldera was formed by the massive Minoan eruption around 1600 BC — one of the strongest volcanic eruptions in human history (VEI 7, comparable to Tambora 1815). The center of the formerly round island collapsed, and the sea flooded into the crater. Since then, Santorini is no longer round but crescent-shaped. Nea Kameni is the most recent evidence that the volcano remains active — geologists expect another eruption in the coming centuries.

Imerovigli (Ημεροβίγλι) is Santorini's best-kept secret — or at least it was until Instagram discovered it. The small village perches at the highest inhabited point of the caldera (310 m) and offers the widest view over the entire crater. The name means "Day Watch" — from here, guards once watched for approaching pirate ships.

Imerovigli has the caldera magic of Oia without the mass tourism: excellent cave hotels (30–50% cheaper than in Oia!), quiet alleys, outstanding restaurants, and the famous view of the Skaros Rock — the most dramatic rocky outcrop of the caldera. On Skaros once stood the medieval fortress Kasteli, Santorini's administrative center from the 13th to the 17th century. Today, a narrow path leads to the top — the view from above is indescribable.

Away from the caldera, it's worth taking a look at the island interior. Karterados (2 km from Fira) is an authentic village with traditional cave houses, rarely visited by tourists. Here, you'll find the cheapest accommodations in Santorini with proximity to Fira. Messaria has the beautiful church Panagia Episkopi (11th century) and the Argyros winery, one of the oldest on the island. Pyrgos is the highest village in Santorini (300 m) with a well-preserved fortress settlement (Kasteli) and a panoramic view considered by locals to be the best on the island — without the caldera prices.
