Oia — The Postcard Village

Oia (Οία, pronounced “Ia”) is Greece's most famous village and one of the most photographed places in the world. At the northern tip of Santorini, it clings dramatically to the 150-meter-high caldera edge: a labyrinth of snow-whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches, cave dwellings, and narrow staircases winding down the steep slope.

The image everyone knows — white houses, blue domes, with the deep blue sea and caldera behind — that is Oia. The famous blue-domed churches (Anastasi and Agios Spyridonas) are among the most photographed motifs in the world. The best perspective is from the small staircase above the main alley — in the morning between 8 and 10 AM, before the crowds arrive, the light is perfect and the alleys are still quiet.

Oia was originally a wealthy seafaring village — the elegant captain's houses (19th-century neoclassicism) still testify to the wealth of the trading fleet. The devastating earthquake of 1956 destroyed large parts of the village, and only the tourism renaissance from the 1970s brought Oia back to life. Today, many of the former cave dwellings (Yposkafa) have been converted into exclusive cave hotels — carved into the rock, with their own infinity pool and caldera view.

Sights: The ruin of Kastro (Venetian fortress, best sunset spot), the windmills at the eastern village entrance, the Maritime Museum in a restored captain's house, the art galleries along the main alley, and the bookstore Atlantis Books (one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, in a cave). For shopping: Oia has the best (and most expensive) boutiques in Santorini — handmade jewelry, art, and ceramics.

💡 Tipp

Oia is flooded with cruise tourists between 11 AM and 7 PM. Come early in the morning (before 9 AM) for empty alleys and perfect photo lighting, or stay until after 8 PM when the day visitors are back on their ships and the village regains its quiet magic.
