Why Santorini?

Santorini is not an ordinary Greek island — it is the crater rim of a massive underwater volcano, whose eruption 3,600 years ago destroyed an entire civilization and likely gave rise to the myth of Atlantis. What remains today is a crescent-shaped island remnant with 300-meter-high cliffs, on which the most famous villages of the Aegean cling: white cube houses, blue-domed churches, and a panorama that brings thousands of people to reverent silence every evening at sunset.

  • The Caldera — Santorini's centerpiece is the vast, sea-filled Caldera: a crater basin 12 kilometers in diameter and up to 400 meters deep, formed by the catastrophic volcanic eruption around 1600 BC. The villages of Oia, Fira, and Imerovigli perch on the crater rim and offer one of the most breathtaking views on earth. Opposite lies the uninhabited volcanic island of Nea Kameni — you can walk over and touch active fumaroles.
  • Sunset in Oia — It is considered the most famous sunset in the world. Every evening, hundreds of people gather at the Kastro fortress ruins and the windmills to watch the sun dip into the Caldera. The last rays turn the white houses into gold and pink — a moment that alone justifies the trip to Santorini.
  • Akrotiri — The Pompeii of the Aegean — The excavation site of Akrotiri is one of the most significant archaeological sensations of the 20th century: a Minoan city buried under ash by the volcanic eruption and thus perfectly preserved. Three-story houses, frescoes, sewers — all 3,600 years old and astonishingly modern.
  • Wine culture on volcanic soil — Santorini is one of the oldest wine-growing regions in the world. The unique Kouloura cultivation method (the vines are woven into wreaths on the ground to protect them from the wind) produces wines of distinctive character. The white Assyrtiko is among the best white wines in Greece — mineral, bone-dry, and perfect with seafood.
  • Volcanic beaches — Instead of golden sand, you will find black, red, and white volcanic beaches on Santorini: the jet-black Perissa Beach, the dramatic Red Beach near Akrotiri, and the white pebble White Beach. Each beach tells a geological story.
  • Romantic Destination No. 1 — Santorini is the world's most sought-after destination for honeymoons and marriage proposals. The combination of Caldera views, sunsets, top-notch cuisine, and luxurious cave hotels with infinity pools makes the island the ultimate place for togetherness.
  • Culinary stronghold — The volcanic soil produces tomatoes with unparalleled flavor, the capers are the best in Greece, the fava (yellow split peas) a classic, and the restaurants on the Caldera edge are among the most atmospheric in the entire Mediterranean.
  • Compact island size — Santorini is only 76 km² in size and 18 km long. You can tour the entire island in a day by car or scooter, visit every beach, and be back in Oia for the sunset. No stress, no rush — everything is close.

Santorini is simultaneously wild and elegant, archaic and luxurious, volcanic and heavenly. It is an island unlike anything else in the world — not other Greek islands, not the Amalfi Coast, not Bali. Anyone who has stood on the Caldera edge and gazed into this crater, with the deep blue sea 300 meters below and the sun setting behind the volcano, understands: Santorini is not a vacation — it is a life experience.
