The Four Seasons

Spring (March–May): Sea of Blossoms and Hiking Paradise

Sardinia's most beautiful season for active vacationers. From March, wild orchids, rockroses, and asphodel bloom, the maquis is intoxicatingly fragrant, and the landscape glows in lush green. Temperatures of 16–25°C are ideal for hikes in the Gennargentu, bike tours along the coast, and visits to the nuraghes without heat and crowds. The sea is still fresh for swimming (16–19°C), but from mid-May, it becomes pleasant on the southern coast. Numerous festivals take place in April and May, including Sant'Efisio in Cagliari (May 1) — the largest religious procession in Sardinia.

Summer (June–August): Beach Paradise and Peak Season

The peak season in Sardinia: 30–38°C, cloudless skies, perfect beach weather. The sea is warm and crystal clear. The Costa Smeralda fills with yachts, the beaches are lively, and the nightlife is vibrant. August is the month of the Italians — Ferragosto (August 15) is sacred, prices peak, and many beaches are overcrowded. June is ideal: warm enough for swimming, not yet crowded. July and August are perfect for pure beach vacations, but expect crowds and high prices.

Autumn (September–November): The Golden Off-Season

Many Sardinia enthusiasts swear by September and October. The sea reaches its peak temperature of 23–25°C, the heat subsides, and the tourist crowds disappear. It's the time of the grape harvest (Cannonau, Vermentino), olive picking, and sagre (village festivals with local specialties). The autumn colors transform the mountainous regions into a sea of colors. November brings the first rainy days but also mild 18–22°C and a wonderful tranquility.

Winter (December–February): Quiet Island, Mild Days

Sardinia's winter is mild on the coast (10–16°C), with occasional rainy days and plenty of sunshine in between. In the mountains, it can snow — the Gennargentu sometimes wears a white cap until March. Most beach hotels are closed, but Cagliari, Alghero, and Olbia are lively year-round. Winter is perfect for cultural trips, low-altitude hikes, and culinary discoveries. In February, the Carnival begins — the archaic Mamuthones of Mamoiada and the Sartiglia of Oristano are unique worldwide.

💡 Tipp

The best time to visit Sardinia: Late May to mid-June (warm, green, affordable) or mid-September to mid-October (warm sea, grape harvest, no crowds). Avoid August if you're seeking peace — half of Italy is on the island then.
