Edinburgh Castle

The castle perches on Castle Rock, a 130-million-year-old volcanic plug, and is Scotland's most visited attraction. It houses the Scottish Crown Jewels (Honours of Scotland), the mysterious Stone of Destiny (the coronation stone of Scottish kings), and the One O'Clock Gun, which fires daily at 1 PM. The view from the castle walls over the city and the Firth of Forth is breathtaking. In August, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo takes place on the Esplanade — the most famous military music spectacle in the world. Admission: £19.50. Book online early — queues can be 90 minutes long in summer.

Royal Mile

The Royal Mile is actually a street with many names: Castlehill, Lawnmarket, High Street, and Canongate. It connects the Castle with the Palace of Holyroodhouse over exactly one Scottish mile (1.8 km). The Closes branch off left and right — narrow, steep alleys leading to hidden courtyards. Each Close has a story: Mary King's Close (an underground street sealed off during the plague) can be visited. In the evening, the Royal Mile becomes the backdrop for ghost tours.

Palace of Holyroodhouse

At the lower end of the Royal Mile lies the official residence of the British monarchy in Scotland. Here lived (and suffered) Mary, Queen of Scots — her private secretary David Rizzio was murdered in 1566 right before her eyes in her private chambers. The history of this palace drips with drama. In the garden lie the ruins of Holyrood Abbey (12th century). Admission: £18.50.

Arthur's Seat

A 251 m high extinct volcano in the middle of the capital — where else can you find that? The hike to the summit takes 45–60 minutes and offers a 360° panorama over Edinburgh, the Firth of Forth, and the Pentland Hills. Several routes with varying difficulty levels. Free, accessible year-round, but slippery when wet.

National Museum of Scotland

One of the best museums in Great Britain — and completely free. From dinosaurs to the history of Scotland to Dolly, the cloned sheep (the original!). The rooftop terrace offers one of the most beautiful views over the Old Town. Allow at least 3 hours, children love it.

Calton Hill

The hill at the eastern end of Princes Street with the unfinished "Parthenon" (National Monument) and the Nelson Monument. The best place for sunset photos: Edinburgh Castle and the Old Town in golden light, the Salisbury Crags behind. Free and climbed in 10 minutes.

Scottish National Gallery

In the heart of the New Town on Princes Street: a first-class collection of paintings with works by Rembrandt, Monet, Cézanne, Turner, and of course, Scottish masters like Raeburn and Ramsay. Free.
