Winter Adventures in Lapland

Swedish Lapland in winter is an adventure playground — the combination of snow, cold, silence, and northern lights makes the north the perfect backdrop for unforgettable experiences:

★★★ Dog Sledding (Hundspann)

The most iconic Lapland experience: A pack of Alaskan Huskies, a sled, the snowy wilderness, and you. The energy of the dogs is contagious — they howl with excitement when they are harnessed, and then: silence. Only the gliding of the runners, the panting of the dogs, and the endless expanse. It is meditative, exciting, and deeply connecting at the same time.

On longer tours, you drive your own sled and are actively involved — harnessing the dogs, feeding, braking. The dogs are athletes and love their job — the connection between human and animal is intense.

★★ Snowmobile Rides

Through the snowy expanse on a snowmobile — an adrenaline rush in the silence. Guided tours from 1,800 SEK (157 €) for 2–3 hours. Night safaris under northern lights are particularly spectacular — the combination of speed, cold, and dancing lights in the sky is surreal. Driver's license required! Most providers supply thermal suits, helmets, and gloves.

★★ Skiing & Cross-Country Skiing

  • Riksgränsen: Sweden's northernmost ski resort on the Norwegian border — the only ski resort in the world where you can ski under the midnight sun (in May!). 29 slopes, freeride terrain, off-piste with heliskiing. Day pass: 495 SEK (43 €).
  • Abisko: Excellent cross-country ski trails through the national park — quiet birch forests, frozen lakes, northern light chances on the trail.
  • Dundret (Gällivare): Small, family-friendly ski resort with northern light panorama — one of the few ski resorts where you can see the aurora while skiing.

★ Ice Fishing (Isfiske)

Drill a hole in the ice, drop a line, and wait — ice fishing is meditative, quiet, and surprisingly successful. The technique is simple: ice drill, short rod, bait (maggots or small lures), patience. Char (röding) and trout (öring) are the most common catches. Many lodges offer guided ice fishing trips (from 800 SEK, 2–3 hrs). Some combine it with a campfire lunch: Grill the freshly caught fish over the fire, with hot coffee — pure Lapland.

★ Moose & Reindeer Safari

In winter, moose and reindeer are particularly visible in the snow — the dark animals stand out against the white. Guided safaris on snowshoes or by snowmobile — often combined with campfire coffee and Gáhkku bread (Sami flatbread) in a Kåta (Sami tent with a fireplace in the center). Price: from 1,200 SEK (105 €) for 3 hours.

💡 Tipp

The temperature in Lapland can drop to -30°C in winter — but when booking activities, you are often provided with thermal suits, boots, and gloves. The dry cold feels less biting than damp 0°C in Germany. The most important rule: wear layers (merino wool as a base, fleece as insulation, wind and waterproof outer layer) and NO cotton sweater under the jacket (cotton retains moisture and then cools). Rub your face with cold protection cream. Batteries discharge quickly in the cold — warm spare batteries in the inner pocket.
