Sami Culture★★

The Sami (Sámi) are the only recognized indigenous people of the EU and have lived in Sápmi for at least 5,000 years — an area that spans northern Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the Kola Peninsula of Russia. In Sweden, about 20,000–40,000 Sami live (exact numbers are difficult as there is no ethnic registration), mainly in Norrbotten and Jämtland.

The Sami history is also a history of oppression: forced relocations, prohibition of the Sami language in schools, skull measurements by the "racial biology" of the early 20th century. Only since the 1970s has there been a rethinking — today, Sami rights are enshrined in the Swedish constitution, and the Sametinget (Sami Parliament, founded in 1993, based in Kiruna) represents Sami interests.

Reindeer Herding — The Heart of the Culture

Reindeer herding is the heart of the Sami culture and economy. Around 2,500 Sami live entirely or partially from reindeer herding — the herds (about 250,000 reindeer in total) follow the seasons between winter pastures in the forest and summer pastures in the fells, just as they have done for thousands of years. The right to herd reindeer is legally reserved for the Sami in Sweden — a unique privilege that protects their traditional way of life. The migrations (rensklljning) in autumn, when the herds are gathered and the calves are marked, are an impressive spectacle.

★★★ Jokkmokk — Capital of the Sami

Jokkmokk (about 3,000 inhabitants) is located directly on the Arctic Circle and is considered the "capital of the Sami" in Sweden. The highlight is the Jokkmokks Marknad — a 400-year-old winter market (first held in 1605!), which takes place every year on the first Thursday in February and lasts three days.

The market is more than a tourist event — it is a cultural life event: Thousands of Sami and visitors come together at temperatures of -20 to -40°C. What you find here:

  • Sami Handicrafts (Duodji): Hand-carved knives with reindeer bone handles, leather pouches, silver jewelry, embroidered belts, and the traditional four-wind hats. Genuine Duodji is expensive but of unique quality and beauty.
  • Reindeer Meat: Smoked, dried, as sausage — reindeer meat is extremely lean, high in protein, and has a wild, earthy taste. Reindeer stew (bidos) is the Sami national dish.
  • Joik Performances: Live joik on stage — one of the most emotional musical experiences you can have.
  • Reindeer Sled Rides: In a sled behind a reindeer through the snowy forest — an ancient means of transport, today a tourist experience, but authentic and quiet.

The Ájtte Museum (Ájtte — Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum) in Jokkmokk is the most significant Sami museum in Sweden: The exhibition tells the Sami history from the Stone Age to today, with traditional clothing (Gákti), tools, tents, and a moving documentation of colonization and resistance. Admission: 120 SEK (10 €).

Joik — The Oldest Music in Europe

The Joik (jojk) is the traditional singing of the Sami — one of the oldest music forms in Europe, comparable to the didgeridoo of the Australian Aboriginals. A joik does not describe something — it is something: You don't joik "about" a person or an animal — you joik the person, the river, the reindeer. Everyone can have their own joik, capturing their essence — a kind of musical portrait. It is a deeply personal expression that gives you goosebumps.

In the modern music world, Sami artists have developed the joik further: Sofia Jannok (combines joik with pop and jazz), Jon Henrik Fjällgren (won 2014 "Talang" / Sweden's Got Talent with a joik that moved the audience to tears), and Maxida Märak (political joik-punk) have made Sami music internationally known.

💡 Tipp

The Sami are not a folkloric attraction but a living people with their own language, culture, and political representation. Respect their culture: Ask for permission before photographing reindeer or Sami ceremonies. Buy crafts directly from Sami artisans (Duodji) — not cheap imitations in tourist shops. The "Sámi Duodji" seal guarantees authentic craftsmanship. The Jokkmokks Marknad in February is one of Europe's most authentic cultural experiences — but dress warmly: -30°C is not uncommon!
