Clarke Quay & Orchard Road
Clarke Quay
Clarke Quay is Singapore's nightlife district — restored warehouses on the Singapore River, brightly lit and full of bars, clubs, and restaurants. The atmosphere is lively, the crowd international, and the drinks flow (albeit at Singaporean prices). Top spots: Zouk (legendary mega-club, since 1991), Level Up (arcade bar), Loof (rooftop). It gets crowded on weekends — cozier during the week.
Raffles Hotel
The Raffles Hotel (1887) is more than a hotel — it is a national monument and symbol of the colonial era. The white colonial-style palace has hosted guests from Rudyard Kipling to Michael Jackson. Even if you're not staying here: Visit the Long Bar, where the Singapore Sling was invented in 1915 (37 SGD per cocktail). Tradition: Throw peanut shells on the floor — the only form of legal littering in Singapore.
Orchard Road
Singapore's 2.2 km long shopping street stretches from Tanglin in the west to Dhoby Ghaut in the east — an endless row of air-conditioned mega-malls:
- ION Orchard: Luxury mall with Louis Vuitton, Prada, Dior. The ION Sky Observation Deck (Level 56) offers free panoramic views.
- Ngee Ann City / Takashimaya: Japanese department store with a food basement (depachika style — Japanese delicacies, sushi, mochi). Singapore's answer to Harrods.
- 313@Somerset: Younger crowd, more affordable brands. MRT station Somerset directly connected.
- Lucky Plaza: The "other side" of Orchard Road — cheaper, livelier, multicultural. Good place for souvenirs and electronics.
Tip: Air conditioning! On hot days, the malls are the perfect escape from the tropical heat. Singaporeans shop not just to buy — they shop to escape the heat.
