Merlion, Esplanade & Waterfront

The Merlion

The Merlion — half lion, half fish — is Singapore's emblem. The 8.6 m high statue at Merlion Park spouts water into Marina Bay and is the city's number one selfie hotspot. The lion's head symbolizes the old name "Singapura" (Lion City), the fish tail the fishing past. Free, and the view from here of the MBS skyline (especially at night) is one of the best in the city.

Esplanade — Theatres on the Bay

The Esplanade is Singapore's cultural center — two huge, spiky domes (locals call them "the Durians") housing concert halls, theaters, a library, and a rooftop terrace with a skyline view. Tip: The Outdoor Terrace on the roof is freely accessible and offers one of the most beautiful night views of Marina Bay. Regular free concerts and performances in the foyer.

Helix Bridge

The Helix Bridge connects Marina Centre with Marina South — a pedestrian-friendly bridge in the shape of a DNA double helix that lights up in colorful hues at night. Perfect for an evening stroll with a skyline panorama. Several viewing platforms along the bridge offer photo spots of MBS, the Merlion, and the CBD skyline.

Fullerton Hotel & Boat Quay

The Fullerton Hotel (former General Post Office, 1928) is one of Singapore's grandest colonial buildings — now a luxury hotel, but the lobby and exterior areas are publicly accessible. From here, you can stroll along the Boat Quay — a row of restored warehouses on the Singapore River, now restaurants and bars with water views.
