Saving Tips
Slovenia is already affordable — with these strategies, it becomes even cheaper:
- Ljubljana Card: For 24/48/72 hours (from €33). Free entry to 20+ museums and attractions, free use of the city bus, free boat ride, and funicular to the castle. Worth it after 2 museum visits.
- Use lunch menus: Dnevno kosilo (daily menu) is available in almost every restaurant for €7–12. In the evening, the same dishes can easily cost double. In Ljubljana, you’ll find the best menus away from the tourist zones.
- Toll vignette: For highways, you need an e-vignette (from €15/week, online at evinjeta.dars.si). Without it, a €300 fine is imminent. Country roads are vignette-free and often more scenic.
- Wild camping (limited): Wild camping is officially not allowed in Slovenia. However, there are numerous affordable campsites (from €10/night) and an increasing number of "camper stops" for motorhomes.
- Tap water: Slovenia is the only EU country that has enshrined the right to drinking water in its constitution. Tap water is top-notch everywhere — no bottles needed.
- Weekly markets: Fresh fruits, vegetables, cheese, and dried meats directly from farmers. Ljubljana’s central market (Mon–Sat) and the markets in Maribor and Koper are perfect for self-caterers.
- Travel in the off-season: In May, June, and September, accommodations are 20–40% cheaper than in July/August. At Lake Bled, this can make a huge difference.
- Free nature: Hiking in national parks, swimming in rivers and lakes, cycling on marked trails — the best experiences in Slovenia cost nothing.
