Discover Ljubljana
Ljubljana (pronounced: Ljub-lja-na, emphasis on the first syllable) is a city that immediately enchants. With only 295,000 inhabitants, it is one of the smallest capitals in Europe—and that is precisely its strength. The car-free old town, the leisurely flowing Ljubljanica River with its curved bridges, the castle on the hill, and the omnipresent greenery create an atmosphere one usually expects only in postcard cities.
What makes Ljubljana unique is the legacy of Jože Plečnik (1872–1957), Slovenia's greatest architect. Plečnik transformed the city into a total work of art in the 1920s–50s: the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje), the National Library (NUK), the market, the river promenades, and countless details. His Ljubljana was proposed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as "Plečnik's Ljubljana" in 2021.
Plan at least 2 days for Ljubljana. One day for the old town, castle, and Plečnik highlights, and another day for museums, Tivoli Park, and the food scene. Those staying longer can explore the surroundings: Škofja Loka, the moorland, and Predjama Castle.
Orientation
Ljubljana is compact and best explored on foot. The main areas:
- Old Town (Staro mesto): On the left bank of the Ljubljanica, below the castle. Narrow medieval alleys, baroque facades, small shops, and cafés. Here are Mestni trg (Town Square), Stari trg (Old Square), and Gornji trg.
- Prešernov trg: Ljubljana's central square with the Franciscan Church, the statue of national poet France Prešeren, and the famous Triple Bridge—the city's hub.
- River Promenades: Both banks of the Ljubljanica are car-free promenades with restaurants, cafés, and terraces on pontoons. In summer, this is the city's vibrant heart.
- Metelkova: Former army barracks, now an autonomous cultural center with clubs, bars, galleries, and street art—Ljubljana's alternative heart, comparable to Berlin's Red Island scene.
- Tivoli: Ljubljana's large city park (5 km²) with old trees, avenues, and exhibitions. Directly west of the center, reachable in 5 minutes on foot.
- Castle (Ljubljanski grad): On the castle hill (376 m), accessible by funicular or footpath (15 min). Panoramic view over the city and the Alps.
