Eating & Drinking in Ljubljana
In recent years, Ljubljana has developed into Europe's culinary surprise. The mix of Austrian coziness, Mediterranean lightness, and Slavic warmth creates a food scene that far exceeds the expectations of a city with 300,000 inhabitants.
Must-Try in Ljubljana
- Odprta kuhna (Open Kitchen) — Every Friday (Mar–Oct), Pogačarjev trg at the market transforms into a street food festival with 30–50 stalls: from beef burgers to truffle risotto to craft beer. The best way to experience Slovenia's culinary diversity in one place. Portions from 5€.
- Štruklji — Slovenian strudel rolls filled with curd, walnuts, or tarragon. A national dish found in every Slovenian gostilna (inn).
- Žlikrofi — Small dumplings (similar to ravioli) from Idrija, filled with a potato-herb mixture and served with game goulash or meat sauce. UNESCO cultural heritage!
- Potica — The Slovenian nut roll cake: a paper-thin yeast dough filled with walnuts, honey, and sometimes chocolate. A must for every holiday, available in every bakery.
- Slovenian Wine — In the wine bars of the old town (Dvorni Bar, Vino & Ribe), sample excellent wines from Goriška Brda, Vipava Valley, and Štajerska. Glass from 3€.
Where to eat?
- Central Market (Tržnica) — Plečnik's market halls by the river: fruits, vegetables, cheese, dried meats, honey, and fresh baked goods. Mon–Sat, liveliest on Saturdays.
- Gostilna na gradu — Restaurant in the castle with Slovenian cuisine and panoramic views. Lunch menu: 12–18€.
- Metelkova District — Affordable, alternative eateries around the cultural center. Vegan and vegetarian options.
- Vošnjakova ulica & Trubarjeva — Off the beaten tourist path: authentic gostilnas with lunch menus from 7€.
Coffee Culture
Drinking coffee in Ljubljana is a way of life. The city has more cafés per capita than Vienna, and the river terraces are lively from morning until midnight. Slovenian coffee is strong, often enjoyed as espresso or a longer coffee. Top cafés: Čokl, TOZD, Kavarna Rog. An espresso costs 1.20–2€—Viennese prices can only dream of that.
