Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter)★★★

Barri Gòtic, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona

The Barri Gòtic is the medieval heart of Barcelona — a labyrinth of narrow alleys, hidden squares, and Gothic palaces built on the remains of the Roman colony Barcino (15 BC). Here, authentic Barcelona pulses between centuries-old churches, flamenco bars, vintage shops, and hidden tapas locales.

Cathedral of Barcelona (La Seu) ★★★

The Gothic cathedral (built 1298–1448) towers over the quarter with its intricate façade. In the shady cloister live 13 white geese — one for each year of the life of Saint Eulàlia, Barcelona's patron saint. The rooftop terrace (elevator 3 €) offers a magnificent panoramic view. Admission to the cathedral: free (Mon–Sat 8:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m.), otherwise 9 €.

Plaça del Rei ★★★

The most beautiful medieval square in Barcelona, surrounded by the Royal Palace (Palau Reial Major) with the impressive Tinell Hall. Under the square: the MUHBA (Museu d'Història de Barcelona) with 4,000 m² of excavated Roman streets, houses, and workshops — an underground walk through ancient Barcino. Admission 7 €.

Plaça Sant Felip Neri ★★

A hidden, quiet square with a baroque church whose façade still shows the bullet holes from the Civil War (1938). One of the most emotional places in Barcelona, away from the tourist crowds. The fountain in the middle, the trees — an oasis of tranquility.

Carrer del Bisbe

The most photogenic alley of the quarter with the neo-Gothic Bridge of Sighs (Pont del Bisbe, 1928), connecting the Palau de la Generalitat with the House of the Canons. Walk underneath and look up — a postcard motif.
