Antoni Gaudí's unfinished masterpiece is not only Barcelona's landmark but one of the most extraordinary buildings in human history. Construction on the basilica has been ongoing since 1882 — and it is expected to be finally completed in 2026, on the 100th anniversary of Gaudí's death. What began as a neo-Gothic church, Gaudí transformed into an organic cathedral of nature: The columns inside branch out like trees, light streams through colored glass windows, bathing the space in an ethereal play of colors — golden-warm in the morning (east side), cool-blue in the afternoon (west side).

The three facades tell the story of Christ: The Nativity Facade (northeast, completed during Gaudí's lifetime) features a lush, naturalistic depiction of the birth. The Passion Facade (southwest, by Josep Maria Subirachs) is angular, austere, and emotionally stirring. The Glory Facade (main entrance, still under construction) will be the largest and most symbolic.

The tower ascent (elevator up, narrow spiral staircase down) offers panoramic views over the city to the sea. Choose the Nativity Facade for the better view and more interesting staircase. In the basement, the museum displays Gaudí's original models and explains his ingenious technique of the "inverted catenary" — he hung strings with weights, photographed them, and flipped the image to find the perfect static form.
