San Sebastián & Pintxos★★★

San Sebastián (Donostia) is the culinary capital of Europe — no other city of its size (190,000 inhabitants) has more Michelin stars per capita. But you don't have to spend a fortune: The real magic lies in the Pintxos bars of the old town (Parte Vieja), where artfully topped bread, miniature works of Basque culinary art, are lined up from 2.50 €.

In addition, there's one of the most beautiful city beaches in Europe: La Concha, a perfect shell bay framed by green hills, with fine golden sand and turquoise water. The beach is right in the city — Pintxos in the morning, swimming in the afternoon, star cuisine in the evening. That's San Sebastián.

The city was the summer residence of the Spanish royal family in the 19th century, and this Belle Époque elegance is still felt everywhere: in the Miramar Palace, in the Art Nouveau facades of the promenade, in the splendid town hall (formerly a casino).

💡 Tipp

The best Pintxos route: Start around 8 pm on Calle 31 de Agosto (Bar Zeruko for creative Pintxos, about 3–5 €/piece), then continue to Calle Fermín Calbetón (La Cuchara de San Telmo for warm Pintxos, about 3–4 €). Rule: maximum 2 Pintxos per bar, then move on. Expect to spend 25–35 € for a full evening with 8–10 Pintxos and Txakolí wine.

Beaches & Attractions

★★★ Playa de la Concha

Regularly listed among the Top 5 city beaches in the world. 1.35 km of fine sand, shell-shaped, protected by the Isla Santa Clara in the bay. Water temperature in summer 19–22°C — refreshing, not icy. Free showers, toilets, lifeguards from June to September.

Tip: In high season (July/August), La Concha is full from 11 am. The neighboring Ondarreta beach (to the west) is quieter, or the surfer beach Zurriola in the Gros district.

★★★ Monte Igueldo

The best viewpoint in the city. A historic funicular from 1912 (4 € round trip) takes you to the summit with a magnificent 360° panorama over the bay, the city, and the Cantabrian coast. At the top, a charmingly old-fashioned amusement park.

★★ Monte Urgull

The hill of the old town with the Castillo de la Mota fortress and the 12-meter-high Christ statue. Free access, shady hiking trails, viewing platforms. 30-minute ascent from the old town.

★★ Old Town (Parte Vieja)

The heart of the pintxos culture. Narrow streets, lively bars, the Basilica Santa María del Coro (baroque facade, free entry), and the harbor with its colorful fishing boats. Quiet during the day, the old town comes alive in the evening from 7 pm.

★★ San Telmo Museoa

Basque cultural museum in a former Dominican monastery from the 16th century. Excellent collection on Basque history, art, and identity. Modern extension by Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos award-winning.

8 € (adults), under 12 free. Tue–Sun 10–20, closed Mondays.

Pintxos — The Basque Tapas Culture

Pintxos (pronounced: "Pintschos") are the Basque version of tapas — but artistic, creative, and often fixed on a piece of bread with a toothpick. San Sebastián has the highest density of pintxos bars worldwide: over 80 in the old town alone.

Classics: Gilda (olive + anchovy + Guindilla pepper, the original pintxo), Tortilla de bacalao (salt cod omelet), Txangurro (stuffed crab), Croquetas de jamón (ham croquettes).

Drink with it: Txakolí (sparkling Basque white wine, poured from a height into the glass, about 2.50 €) or Zurrito (small beer, about 1.80 €).

Michelin-Starred Restaurants

San Sebastián currently has 9 Michelin stars in the region. The top 3:

  • Arzak (★★★) — Juan Mari Arzak and daughter Elena, pioneers of New Basque Cuisine since 1989. Menu from about 250 €/person.
  • Martín Berasategui (★★★) — 12 km outside, often called the best restaurant in Spain. Menu from about 280 €/person.
  • Mugaritz (★★) — Avant-garde cuisine bordering on art. Menu from about 220 €/person.

Reservations for all Michelin-starred restaurants at least 2–3 months in advance. For Arzak and Berasategui in high season 4–6 months.

💡 Tipp

For the best value for money: Many Michelin-starred chefs run more affordable second restaurants. Arzak has "Ama Lur" (menu from 45 €), Berasategui has "Taller" (pintxos from 4 €). They cook with the same expertise, but without the star prices.
