Best Travel Time & Climate
Spain is large and climatically diverse — there is no one best travel time. What is perfect for Andalusia might be too cold for Northern Spain and irrelevant for the Canary Islands. Here's the overview:
Climate Zones
Spain has at least four different climate zones:
- Mediterranean Climate (East Coast, Balearic Islands): Hot, dry summers (30–35°C), mild winters (10–15°C). Barcelona, Valencia, Costa Brava, Costa Blanca.
- Continental Climate (Central Spain): Extremes: hot summers (35–40°C!), cold winters (0–5°C, snow possible). Madrid, Castile, Aragón. "Nine months of winter, three months of hell," say the Madrileños.
- Atlantic Climate (North Coast): Mild and humid year-round (12–25°C), lots of rain. Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias, Galicia. The "green Spain."
- Subtropical Climate (Canary Islands): Eternal spring (18–28°C), hardly any temperature fluctuations. Year-round destination.
- Semidesert Climate (Southeast): Almería and Murcia — Europe's driest region, over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year.

💡 Tipp
The absolute secret time for Andalusia is late March to mid-April: pleasant 20–25°C, orange blossoms everywhere, and you experience the spectacular Semana Santa (Holy Week) with its dramatic processions. Seville's Feria de Abril follows two weeks after Easter — the largest folk festival in Andalusia.
