For Every Type of Traveler
Spain is one of the few countries that truly makes every type of traveler happy. Here are the best recommendations:
Cultural Travelers
Spain has 50 UNESCO World Heritage Sites — only Italy and China have more. The three must-see cultural cities: Granada (Alhambra), Barcelona (Gaudí, Picasso Museum), and Madrid (Prado, Reina Sofía). Also: the old town of Toledo, the Mezquita in Córdoba, Salamanca's golden university, Segovia's Roman aqueduct, and Santiago de Compostela. For a cultural trip, 2–3 weeks are ideal.
Beach Vacationers
Over 8,000 km of coastline and almost 600 Blue Flag beaches (world record!). The best: Costa de la Luz (Andalusia — wild, unspoiled, perfect for surfing), Costa Brava (Catalonia — dramatic rocky coves), Costa Blanca (Valencia — family-friendly, sunny, with infrastructure), Fuerteventura (endless white beaches), and Playa de las Catedrales (Galicia — cathedral-like rock formations at low tide).
Foodie Travelers
Spain has the third most Michelin stars worldwide. San Sebastián is the mecca (highest star density per capita), along with Barcelona's innovative cuisine and Seville's tapas tradition. Regional highlights: Paella in Valencia (only at lunchtime, never in the evening!), Pulpo a la Gallega in Galicia, Jamón Ibérico from Extremadura, Gazpacho in Andalusia. The market halls (Mercados) in every major city are culinary cathedrals.
Hikers & Nature Lovers
15 national parks and countless nature reserves. Highlights: Picos de Europa (dramatic limestone peaks), Ordesa y Monte Perdido (Pyrenees, Spain's Grand Canyon), Teide (volcanic landscape on Tenerife), Sierra Nevada (Europe's southernmost ski area, summer hiking), Camino de Santiago (800 km from the Pyrenees to Santiago). For day hikes, the Caminito del Rey near Málaga is an absolute highlight — a via ferrata through a 100 m deep gorge.
Families
Spaniards love children — nowhere in Europe are families more welcome. Restaurants almost always have high chairs, children often eat for free, and at 10 PM, toddlers are still on the plaza. Best family destinations: Costa Blanca (shallow beaches, infrastructure), Valencia (Oceanogràfic, Bioparc), Canary Islands (Siam Park, Loro Parque, weather guarantee), Barcelona (Tibidabo, Aquarium, beach).
Budget Travelers
Spain is significantly cheaper than Germany, especially for food and drinks. The Menú del Día (lunch menu with 3 courses + drink for €10–15) is available in every restaurant. Beer costs €1.50–2.50 (Caña), coffee €1.20–1.80. Cheapest: Andalusia, Valencia, and the interior. Most expensive: San Sebastián, Barcelona, Ibiza. Hostels from €15–20/night, vacation apartments from €35–50/night.
Active Travelers
Surfing: Mundaka (Basque Country), Tarifa (kitesurfing mecca), Fuerteventura. Climbing: El Chorro (Málaga), Montserrat, Riglos (Aragón). Cycling: Mallorca (own guide!), Catalonia, Canary Islands. Diving: Costa Brava (Medes Islands), Canary Islands (clear water, turtles). Skiing: Sierra Nevada (Dec–Apr), Pyrenees (Baqueira Beret — the royal family's favorite resort).
