Đổi Mới — Vietnam's Economic Miracle

After the war, difficult decades followed: The reunification in 1976 brought the entire country under communist rule, but the economy was in ruins. Hundreds of thousands of Boat People fled across the sea — many drowned, others ended up in refugee camps in Southeast Asia.

In 1986, a quiet revolution began: Đổi Mới ("Renovation") — Vietnam's version of Chinese economic reforms. The government retained political control (one-party state) but opened the economy to private enterprises and foreign investments. The results are spectacular:

  • 1986: Vietnam was among the poorest countries in the world.
  • 2026: Growth rate of 6–7% annually, one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia. Poverty reduced from 60% (1986) to under 5%.
  • Exports: Samsung produces more smartphones in Vietnam than in South Korea. Nike, Adidas, Intel — all have factories in Vietnam.

Today's Vietnam is a fascinating contradiction: Communist one-party rule meets rampant capitalism. Hammer and sickle on the flags, but Apple Stores in the shopping centers. Propaganda posters next to Instagram cafés. Pragmatism has triumphed — and the Vietnamese are proud of their rise.

💡 Tipp

The Hỏa Lò Prison ("Hanoi Hilton") in Hanoi tells the story from two perspectives: as a French colonial prison and as a POW camp for American pilots (including John McCain). Fascinating and thought-provoking.
