Rice Terraces & Mountains

Vietnam's mountain landscapes in the north and central highlands offer some of the most impressive cultural landscapes in Asia.

Rice Terraces

The rice terraces of Sapa, Mù Cang Chải, and Hoàng Su Phì are man-made works of art — created over centuries by ethnic minorities. Most beautiful:

  • September–October: Golden harvest — the terraces glow in golden hues.
  • May–June: Water reflections — the flooded terraces reflect the sky.
  • Mù Cang Chải: Less known than Sapa, but the terraces are even more spectacular and far less visited.

Mountains

  • Fansipan (3,143 m): Highest mountain in Indochina. By trek (2 days) or cable car (15 min.).
  • Hoàng Liên Sơn: Vietnam's highest mountain range with subtropical mountain forest.
  • Đồng-Văn-Karst Plateau (Ha Giang): UNESCO Global Geopark — the oldest rock formations in Southeast Asia (over 500 million years).
