Ayia Napa & Eastern Coast

The southeastern tip of Cyprus between Ayia Napa and Protaras is what most people imagine as a "Cyprus vacation": turquoise water, white sand, rows of sun umbrellas, and beach bars with cocktails. Here lie the beaches that appear on every Instagram timeline — Nissi Beach, Fig Tree Bay, Konnos Bay.

But the region offers more than just beaches. The Cape Greco between Ayia Napa and Protaras is a national park with spectacular cliffs, sea caves, and hiking trails. The Sea Caves are a snorkeling paradise, and inland lies the medieval Ayia Napa Monastery, which gave the town its name.

Ayia Napa itself has two faces: a relaxed seaside resort by day, and the party capital of the eastern Mediterranean by night, often compared to Ibiza. For those who prefer it quieter, drive 10 km to Protaras — everything there is geared towards families.

★★★ Nissi Beach

Cyprus's most famous beach — and one of the most beautiful in the entire Mediterranean. 500 meters of white powder sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, and a small offshore rock island (Nissi) that can be waded to at low tide. In summer: DJ sets, foam parties, and an international crowd. In the off-season (April, October): paradisiacally quiet and almost empty.

The bay is sheltered, and the water is usually calm and shallow — perfect for swimming. At the eastern end: a natural bridge (rock bridge) for photography.

★★★ Fig Tree Bay (Protaras)

Regularly voted the best beach in Europe (TripAdvisor). 500 meters of golden sand, protected by offshore rocks, crystal-clear, shallow water. The namesake fig tree still stands on the beach. Ideal for families: shallow entry, no waves, water sports, lifeguards.

★★ Konnos Bay

Hidden in a bay between pines on the edge of the Cape Greco National Park. Smaller (150 m) but beautiful: golden sand, turquoise water, surrounded by green hills. Less crowded than Nissi Beach, but still full in high season. Good snorkeling at the rocks.

★★ Makronissos Beach

Three adjacent sandy bays, 5 km west of Ayia Napa. Quieter than Nissi, but just as beautiful. Shallow, warm water, ideal for children. Nearby: ancient rock tombs from the Hellenistic-Roman period (freely accessible).

★ Sunrise Beach (Protaras)

Long sandy beach in the center of Protaras, named after the spectacular sunrises. Less photogenic than Fig Tree Bay, but more space and good tourist infrastructure.

★ Landa Beach (Golden Beach)

Between Nissi and the center of Ayia Napa. Quieter, more local, with an excellent tavern right on the beach. Shallow, clear water.

★★★ Cape Greco (Kavo Gkreko)

The cape at the southeastern tip of Cyprus is a protected national park and one of the most beautiful coastal sections of the island. Dramatic cliffs plunge 30–40 meters into the turquoise sea, natural rock bridges span caves, and the view extends to Lebanon on a clear day.

Sea Caves

Along the west side of the cape, wind and waves have carved spectacular caves and rock formations into the cliffs. The most famous is the "Lovers Bridge" — a natural rock bridge over the sea. The caves can be reached by hiking trail (15 min. from the parking lot) or by kayak. In calm seas, you can swim and snorkel into the caves — the play of light underwater is magical.

Kamara tou Koraka (Natural Arch)

The most famous natural arch in Cyprus — a massive rock bridge spanning a bay. A hotspot for photographers, especially at sunrise. Accessible by hiking trail (1 km from the parking lot).

Hiking Trails

The Cape Greco Trail (4 km, 1.5h) runs along the cliffs with panoramic views. Easy, well-marked, also suitable for children. Go early morning (before 9 AM) or in the evening — during the day it's shadeless and hot.

Blue Hole

A natural rock opening at Cape Greco, popular with cliff jumpers and snorkelers. The water is deep and crystal clear. Not an official swimming beach — at your own risk. Spectacular, but not suitable for children.

Cape Greco National Park. Free. 24/7 accessible. The tip of the cape is a military restricted area (British base, radar) — not accessible.

Nightlife in Ayia Napa

Ayia Napa is the party capital of the eastern Mediterranean — often compared to Ibiza or Kavos. The epicenter is Louka Louka Street (the "Strip") and the adjacent alleys, where dozens of clubs, bars, and cocktail bars line up.

• Club Season: June–September. International DJs, foam and pool parties, UV parties.
• Most Famous Clubs: Castle Club (in a converted Crusader building), Soho, Club Ice. Entry: 10–30€ incl. drink.
• Bars: Senior Frogs (cocktails, party atmosphere), Bedrock Inn (Flintstones theme, absurd but fun), The Brewery (craft beer).
• Audience: Mainly 18–30, many Brits. In high season loud and wild — if that's what you're looking for, you're in the right place.

Outside the season (October–May), Ayia Napa is quiet — many clubs are closed, and the town belongs to the locals.

Ayia Napa Monastery

In the center, surrounded by bars and restaurants, stands the medieval Ayia Napa Monastery (15th–16th century) — a surprisingly peaceful place amid the hustle and bustle. Venetian fountain, Gothic cloister, an ancient mulberry tree in the courtyard. Freely accessible.

Thalassa Museum

Small but fine marine museum with a reconstruction of an ancient Greek merchant ship (Kyrenia II — the original is in the Shipwreck Museum in Kyrenia/Northern Cyprus). Also fossils, marine life, and ancient anchors.

WaterWorld Water Park

One of the largest themed water parks in Europe, designed in ancient Greek style (Zeus slides, Trojan horse, Atlantis pool). 35 water slides and attractions. A full-day experience for families with children.

Ayia Thekla Rd, 3 km west. 40€ adults, 25€ children (3–12), under 3 free. April–October. Online tickets cheaper.

Water Sports

• Boat Tours: Glass-bottom boats from Ayia Napa Harbor (from 15€), party boats (from 30€), snorkeling tours
• Jet Ski: At almost every beach (30 min. approx. 50€)
• Parasailing: From Nissi Beach (approx. 45€)
• Diving: Excellent diving spots around Cape Greco. Green Bay is ideal for beginners (underwater sculpture park!). PADI dive schools from 50€/dive.
• Kayaking: To the Sea Caves (from 20€ for 2h). The most beautiful way to explore the caves.

Protaras is only 10 km east of Ayia Napa, but it's a completely different world: quiet, family-friendly, well-maintained. There is no club mile here, but rather beach promenades, fish & chips restaurants (British heritage), and mini-golf.

Highlights

• Fig Tree Bay: The star beach (see above) — perfect for families
• Profitis Ilias: The small chapel on the 100 m high hill offers the best 360° view of the region. 150 steps, best at sunset. Illuminated Way of the Cross in the evening.
• Magic Dancing Waters: Water fountain show with music and light effects. Kitschy, but kids love it. Evenings, entry 25€.
• Ocean Aquarium: Small aquarium with penguins (!), crocodiles, and tropical fish. Suitable for a rainy day. 12€ adults.

For whom?

Protaras is ideal for families with children, couples seeking tranquility, and beach lovers who want to avoid Nissi Beach parties. The hotels are often cheaper than in Ayia Napa, and the beaches are at least as beautiful.

Recommended Restaurants

★★★ Vassos Fish Restaurant (Ayia Napa Harbor)

Since 1962, the best fish restaurant in the region — right at the fishing harbor. The fish platter for two (grilled dorado, barbouni, calamari, shrimp) is legendary. It doesn't get any fresher.

★★ Sage Restaurant & Wine Bar

Modern Cypriot fine dining on the main street of Ayia Napa. Creatively interpreted classics: halloumi with fig chutney, lamb shank with Commandaria reduction. Excellent wine list.

★★ Paralimni Tavernas

The best (and cheapest) restaurants in the region are not on the beach, but 5 km north in Paralimni — the real town behind the resorts. This is where the locals eat: meze for 18€, souvlaki for 8€, moussaka for 10€. Recommendation: Potamos Fish Tavern and Kanalli.

Street Food

• Souvlaki/Gyros Pita: The standard meal — meat in flatbread with salad, tzatziki, tomatoes. 4–6€, at every kiosk.
• Halloumi Sandwich: Grilled halloumi with tomatoes and cucumber in bread. 5€.
• Loukoumades: Fried honey balls — the perfect dessert. 4–6€ a portion.

Getting There

Larnaka (LCA) is the nearest airport (45 km, 40 min.). No direct bus — pre-book transfer (20–25€/person) or taxi (45–55€). Car rental recommended.

Accommodation

Ayia Napa: From party hostels to luxury resorts. Budget: Nissi Park Hotel (mid-range, 300 m from the beach). Package deals often offer the best value for money. Luxury: Grecian Bay (right on the beach), Adams Beach Hotel.

Protaras: More family-friendly. Capo Bay Hotel (right on Fig Tree Bay), Sunrise Pearl (upscale mid-range). Many apartments and holiday homes for self-caterers.

Getting Around

Bus 101/102 connects Ayia Napa, Cape Greco, and Protaras (1.50€, every 15–20 min. in season). For the beaches and Cape Greco, the bus is sufficient. For the rest of the island: car rental.

Day Trips

• Cape Greco: 15 min. by car, by bus 101. Hiking, snorkeling, cliffs.
• Larnaka (Salt Lake & Hala Sultan Tekke): 40 min. Combine with flamingos (Nov–March) and the beautiful mosque by the lake.
• Nicosia (Green Line): 1h drive. Best as a day trip with a rental car.
• Lefkara: 50 min. Lace village in the Troodos foothills.
