Jordaan
The Jordaan is Amsterdam's most charming neighborhood — and if you ask locals, most would say: "This is where I'd most like to live." What began as a working-class neighborhood in the 17th century (the name probably comes from the French "jardin" — garden) is now a labyrinth of narrow canals, hidden courtyards, vintage shops, and cozy cafés.
Highlights
- Hofjes: Amsterdam's best-kept secret are the hofjes — historical courtyards, originally built as almshouses for single women or widows. In the Jordaan, there are over a dozen, most of which are free to access (respect the silence!). The most beautiful: Karthuizerhof (Karthuizerstraat 21–131), Sint Andrieshofje (Egelantiersgracht 107), and Claes Claeszhofje (1. Egelantiersdwarsstraat).
- Lindengracht Market: Every Saturday from 9 am–4 pm: Amsterdam's best weekly market — fruits, vegetables, cheese, flowers, clothing, vintage, and street food. Less touristy than Albert Cuyp.
- Noordermarkt: Saturdays farmers' market (organic products) and Mondays antique market on the square in front of the Noorderkerk (1623). The best place for an organic breakfast.
- Westerkerk: The tallest church in Amsterdam (85 m tower, climbable for a panoramic view!). Rembrandt is buried here (somewhere — the exact grave is unknown). Right next to the Anne Frank House.
- Canal Walks: Egelantiersgracht, Bloemgracht, and Brouwersgracht are among the most beautiful canals in the city — smaller, quieter, and more photogenic than the big three.
💡 Tipp
The Jordaan is at its best on Saturday morning: Lindengracht Market, Noordermarkt, coffee in one of the cafés, and then a stroll through the courtyards. During the week, it's quieter and just as beautiful. In the evenings: Brown Cafés! Café 't Smalle (Egelantiersgracht 12) is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the city.
