Cafayate, Tren a las Nubes & Wine Region

★★★ Cafayate — Wine at 1,660 Meters

Cafayate is the second major wine center of Argentina — and a completely different experience from Mendoza. Located at 1,660 m in the Calchaquí Valleys, Cafayate is the home of Torrontés — an aromatic white grape that finds its best expression here. The Torrontés from Cafayate is fruity, floral, and refreshing — it smells of nutmeg, roses, and peaches and is perfect for hot days. The bodegas are smaller and more personal than in Mendoza, the atmosphere more relaxed, the wine tastings more intimate.

  • ★★★ Bodega El Esteco: One of the oldest and most beautiful — the main house is a stately colonial building with a courtyard, restaurant, and beautiful garden. Excellent Torrontés and Malbec. Tour + tasting: approx. 5,000 ARS
  • ★★ Bodega Nanni: Family-run for generations — here, the owner personally explains the wine. Excellent Torrontés, personal tours, fair prices
  • ★★ Bodega Piattelli: Modern winery with a breathtaking terrace overlooking the vineyards and mountains. Wine tastings at sunset here are a highlight. Reservation recommended
  • ★ Bodega Domingo Hermanos: Small family winery, organic certified, especially for Tannat (a rare grape variety)
  • ★★ Museo de la Vid y el Vino: The wine museum explains the history of viticulture in the region — interactive, well done, and air-conditioned (a welcome break at 35°C!). Approx. 3,000 ARS

Wine tour by bike: The bodegas in Cafayate are close to each other (2–5 km) — perfect for a bike wine tour! Bike rental from approx. 5,000 ARS/day on the main street. 3–4 bodegas in one day are doable. Don't forget water — it's hot!

★★★ Quebrada de las Flechas — The Road of Arrows

The drive from Salta to Cafayate (or vice versa) via the Ruta 40 and 68 is one of the most spectacular roads in Argentina. The “Quebrada de las Flechas" (Gorge of Arrows) is a surreal valley where sharp rock formations rise like giant arrowheads from the ground — millions of years old rock layers that have been almost vertically uplifted by tectonic forces.

Stop at these photo spots (coming from Salta):

  • Quebrada de las Flechas: The eponymous “arrows" — inclined rock slabs like something out of a fantasy film. Most spectacular in deep light
  • Garganta del Diablo (Quebrada de Cafayate): A narrow, blood-red sandstone gorge. Short walk from the parking lot
  • Anfiteatro: A natural amphitheater in the rock — the acoustics are actually perfect. Street musicians use it as a concert hall
  • El Obelisco: A single, narrow rock tower that rises like a needle into the sky
  • Los Castillos: Rock formations that look like medieval castle towers — particularly impressive at sunset
  • El Sapo (The Frog): A rock formation that actually looks like a giant frog

The entire Salta–Cafayate route: approx. 190 km, 3.5h without stops — but plan 5–6h with photo stops! Most flexible by rental car, as an organized tour from Salta: approx. 30,000–50,000 ARS.

★★ Tren a las Nubes — The Train to the Clouds

One of the highest railway lines in the world: The Tren a las Nubes travels from Salta to over 4,220 m altitude to the Viaducto La Polvorilla — an elegant 224 m long arch bridge that spans a deep gorge at 63 m height. On clear days, the train literally travels through the clouds. The route overcomes 29 bridges, 21 tunnels, 13 viaducts, and 2 zig-zag sections (where the train changes direction to gain altitude) — a masterpiece of railway engineering from the 1940s.

What you need to know:

  • Season: Approx. April–November (dry season), only Sat/Sun and selected weekdays
  • Duration: Approx. 16h round trip (departure Salta 7:00, return approx. 23:00)
  • Price: Approx. 80–120€ (expensive, but unique)
  • Altitude sickness: At 4,220 m, altitude sickness is real! Coca tea and coca leaves are distributed on the train. Move slowly, drink plenty
  • Alternative: The same route can be driven by car or minibus as a day tour from Salta — more flexible, cheaper (approx. 30,000 ARS), and you can stop wherever you want. The view is the same!
