Fraser Island (K'gari)★★

K'gari (Fraser Island), Queensland (Fähre ab Hervey Bay oder Rainbow Beach)
Fähre: ab 180 AUD (Return/Fahrzeug) | 2-Tages-Tour: ab 399 AUD | Vehicle Permit: 52,75 AUD

K'gari (Fraser Island) is the largest sand island in the world — 123 kilometers long, UNESCO World Heritage, and a place that defies imagination: On an island of sand, ancient rainforests grow, there are over 100 freshwater lakes with crystal clear water, dingoes roam the beach, and the endless Seventy-Five-Mile Beach serves as a highway.

The island is only accessible with four-wheel drive vehicles — there are no paved roads, only sand tracks. That's part of the adventure.

Highlights

  • Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora): A freshwater lake with dazzling white quartz sand and incredibly blue water — one of the purest lakes in the world. Swimming is a dream. The most popular spot on the island.
  • Eli Creek: A crystal clear stream where you can float 75 meters through the rainforest. Natural lazy river, free and refreshing.
  • Seventy-Five-Mile Beach: 120 km of beach as an official road — cars and buses drive along the water's edge. Here also lie the wreck of the Maheno (1935 stranded ocean liner) and the colored sand cliffs of the Pinnacles.
  • Indian Head: Headland with panoramic views — perfect for spotting sharks, rays, turtles, and whales (seasonal) from above.
  • Champagne Pools: Natural rock pools where the sea bubbles in — like a whirlpool. Swimming is only safe here (open ocean has dangerous currents).

💡 Tipp

Book a guided tour (2–3 days from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach, from 399 AUD) or rent a 4WD and drive yourself. For self-drivers: Permit (52.75 AUD per vehicle), lower tire pressure (18–20 psi for sand), pay attention to tides (the beach is a highway!).

Achtung

K'gari has a dingo population — the animals are wild and can become aggressive. Always keep food sealed, never feed dingoes, never leave children alone. Beach camping only in fenced areas. Do NOT swim in the sea — strong currents and sharks.
