Gold Coast★★
The Gold Coast is Australia's answer to Miami — 57 kilometers of golden sandy beach, lined with skyscrapers, theme parks, and an inexhaustible party and surf scene. For some, it's kitsch, for others, paradise. One thing is certain: the waves are real, the sunshine (300 days/year) is reliable, and the hinterland is surprisingly wild.
Beaches
- Surfers Paradise: The center of the Gold Coast — skyscrapers, nightlife, shopping malls, and a wide beach with consistent waves. Touristy but energetic. Friday evenings: Beachfront Night Markets.
- Burleigh Heads: The more relaxed, hip alternative to Surfers. Excellent surf break, café scene, and the Burleigh Head National Park with a short coastal walk and whale watching (Jun–Nov). The Justin Lane (1708 Gold Coast Highway) is a legendary rooftop bar.
- Coolangatta: At the southern end, on the NSW border. Quieter, family-friendly, with Snapper Rocks — one of the best surf breaks in Australia.
Hinterland — the green surprise
Just 30 minutes from the beaches lies the Gold Coast Hinterland — ancient rainforest, waterfalls, and mountains:
- Springbrook National Park: Natural Bridge with glowworm cave (at night, free!). Purling Brook Falls (109 m waterfall). Best of All Lookout with views to the coast.
- Tamborine Mountain: Wineries, cheese factories, rainforest skywalk (19.90 AUD), and a village full of galleries and boutiques.
- Lamington National Park: UNESCO World Heritage with 160 km of hiking trails through subtropical rainforest. Tree Top Walk (O'Reilly's) and wild parrots that sit on your hand.
💡 Tipp
The Gold Coast is divided: Surfers Paradise for party and action, Burleigh Heads and Coolangatta for relaxed beach lifestyle. Insider tip: The glowworm cave in the Natural Bridge (Springbrook NP) is magical at night — free, but visit only with a flashlight and without a flash.
