Optimal Day Planning Atacama

Ideal 4-Day Plan for San Pedro de Atacama

The Atacama tours start at different times of the day — the optimal plan maximizes the day and respects altitude acclimatization:

Day 1 (Arrival Day): Acclimatization

Morning: Arrival, check into hotel, explore San Pedro. Visit Iglesia de San Pedro (free), visit Museo Arqueológico (2,500 CLP).
Afternoon: Valle de la Luna at sunset (15,000–20,000 CLP). The tour starts around 3:30–4:00 PM and offers a gentle introduction to the Atacama landscape.
Evening: Pisco Sour at Adobe, early sleep (Geyser tour the next morning!).

Day 2: Geysers & Hot Springs

4:00 AM: Start of the geyser tour (hotel pick-up). 1.5-hour drive in the dark. Sunrise at the geysers, breakfast, bath in the hot pool. Return around 11:00 AM.
Afternoon: Termas de Puritama (optional, 35,000 CLP) — the perfect complement to the cold morning. Or: Rest by the pool, as the 4 AM alarm takes its toll.
Evening: Stargazing tour (9:00–11:30 PM). Book with SPACE or Atacama Desert Stargazing.

Day 3: Salt Flats & Lagoons

All day: Tour to the Lagunas Altiplánicas, Piedras Rojas, and Salar de Atacama (35,000–50,000 CLP). Start around 7:00 AM, return around 5:00 PM. The landscapes on the Altiplano are the most photogenic of the entire trip. Sunset at Laguna Chaxa (flamingos).
Evening: Farewell dinner at Baltinache or CKuri.

Day 4: Departure or Extra Day

Option A: Valle de la Muerte and sandboarding in the morning, then departure to Calama.
Option B: Laguna Cejar (swimming in the salt lake) in the afternoon.
Option C: Bike tour through the village and surroundings (bikes from 5,000 CLP/day).
Option D: Tour to Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia (3 days, from 150 USD) — for those continuing to Bolivia.

💡 Tipp

Golden rule for Atacama planning: No geysers on the first day! The body needs at least 24 hours to acclimatize to 2,440 m before going to 4,320 m. Day 1: Valle de la Luna (2,400–2,600 m). Day 2: Geysers (4,320 m). Day 3: Lagunas Altiplánicas (4,100–4,300 m). This way, you gradually increase the altitude.
