Marble Caves — Patagonia's Most Surreal Natural Wonder

On the shores of Lago General Carrera (the second-largest lake in South America, shared between Chile and Argentina), the turquoise glacier water has carved caves, arches, and tunnels out of pure marble over millennia — a natural wonder that ranks among the most spectacular in the world. The colors are unreal: Light refracts in the crystal-clear water and casts swaying turquoise, blue, and emerald reflections on the smooth marble walls of the caves.

There are three main formations:

• Capillas de Mármol (Marble Chapel): The most famous formation — a massive marble arch through which you can pass by boat or kayak
• Catedral de Mármol (Marble Cathedral): A huge cave with cathedral-high ceilings and shimmering marble walls
• Caverna de Mármol (Marble Cave): Deeper caves with narrower passages and the most intense light reflections

The colors of the Marble Caves change with the lake's water level: In spring (September–November), when meltwater fills the lake, the water is the most turquoise and the reflections the most intense. In summer (December–February), the colors are slightly muted, but the weather is more stable.

Getting There & Tour

The Marble Caves are located near the small town of Puerto Río Tranquilo on the Carretera Austral (about 220 km south of Coyhaique). Boat tours start at the harbor and last 1.5–2 hours (15,000–25,000 CLP). In calm weather, kayak tours are also offered (3–4 hours, 35,000–50,000 CLP) — the more intense experience, as you can paddle deeper into the caves.
