Tipping
Tipping is not mandatory in Greece, but appreciated — and expected in some situations.
Typical Tips
| Situation | Typical Tip | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurant / Tavern | 5-10% of the bill | Leave on the table (not on the bill). For very good service, gladly 10% |
| Cafe / Bar | Leave small change | 50 cents to 1 EUR when paying |
| Taxi | Round up | Round up from 8.40 EUR to 9 or 10 EUR |
| Chambermaid | 1-2 EUR per day | Leave on the pillow on the last day |
| Tour Guide / Boat Tours | 5-10 EUR per person | For full-day tours at the upper end |
| Porter | 1 EUR per piece of luggage | In hotels and at the port |
| Hairdresser | 1-2 EUR | Optional |
Good to Know
- In taverns, there is often a "couvert" (cover charge) on the bill — this is NOT a tip, but a fee for bread, cutlery, and tablecloth (1-2 EUR per person). This is legal and common
- With card payment, there is usually no tip option on the terminal. Leave the tip separately in cash on the table
- In simple taverns in the countryside, tips are less expected than in tourist restaurants
