Budget Levels

Backpacker / Budget (€35–55 per day)

Hostels, simple guesthouses (Domatia) or camping, self-catering with supermarket purchases (Lidl, Carrefour, AB Vassilopoulos), Gyros Pita as a cheap meal, KTEL buses as the main transport, free beaches, and hikes. Crete has several campsites, and many rural guesthouses cost under €30 a night. Water: always buy the large 1.5l bottles at the supermarket (€0.30–0.50 instead of €1–2 at the kiosk).

Mid-range (€60–120 per day)

Good hotels or apartments with a kitchen, rental car (sharing significantly reduces costs!), tavern meals for lunch and dinner, occasionally a boat trip or guided tour. The most comfortable and best way to experience Crete — explore the island flexibly with a rental car, dine in authentic taverns, and stay in charming accommodations.

Comfort / Luxury (€150–400+ per day)

Boutique hotels in Chania or Elounda, upscale restaurants, private boat tours, winery visits with tastings, spa resorts. Crete has excellent luxury options, especially around Elounda (some of the best resorts in Greece), in the old town of Chania (boutique hotels in Venetian city palaces), and in Plakias (yoga retreats). The value for money is better than on Santorini or Mykonos, even in the luxury segment.

💡 Tipp

The best savings tip for Crete: Share a rental car with 2–4 people and book apartments with a kitchen. Buy fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, and bread at the market, have a picnic for lunch, and dine in a tavern in the evening. This way, you can experience Crete's culinary delights at the highest level — for a fraction of the hotel costs.
