Hulhumalé — The City of the Future★★
Hulhumalé is one of the most ambitious land reclamation projects in the world — a completely artificial island, started in 1997 and still growing. While Malé is bursting at the seams, Hulhumalé offers room to breathe: wider streets, modern apartment blocks, parks, and a long public beach.
Sinamalé Bridge — The Project of the Century
The Sinamalé Bridge (officially: China-Maldives Friendship Bridge) was opened in 2018 and connects Malé, Hulhulé (airport), and Hulhumalé via a 2 km long, four-lane bridge. The prestige project, financed with Chinese loans, has fundamentally changed the geography of the capital region — for the first time, the three islands are accessible by car.
For tourists, the bridge means: Taxi from the airport to Hulhumalé in 5 minutes (30–50 MVR / 2–3 $). The view from the bridge at night — illuminated skyline of Malé on the left, airport lights on the right, dark ocean below — is spectacular.
Beach & Snorkeling
The Hulhumalé Beach stretches over almost 2 km on the east side of the island — publicly accessible, with cafés and restaurants within walking distance. Unlike the beaches on local islands, there is no designated Bikini Beach here — swimwear is acceptable, but a covered swimsuit is recommended.
A highlight for snorkelers: At the southeastern end of Hulhumalé lies an artificial reef that offers surprisingly good underwater life — clownfish, parrotfish, small moray eels, occasionally rays. Accessible from the beach, no tour needed. The best time is at high tide in the morning when the water is clear and calm.
Hotels in Hulhumalé
Hulhumalé is the perfect base for the first and last day of the trip — hotels are half the price of those in Malé, the airport is reachable in 5 minutes, and you can swim off the jetlag at the beach.
