Best Travel Time & Climate
Oman has a hot desert climate in the north and a tropical-arid climate in the south. Temperatures can reach extreme values in summer — choosing the right travel time is crucial.
Best Time: October–April
The ideal travel time for the north and most regions:
- October–November: Perfect! The summer heat is broken, 25–33°C on the coast, few tourists, affordable prices. Ideal combination of weather and value.
- December–February: High season. Pleasant 20–28°C in Muscat, perfect for desert and mountains. Cool nights in the mountains (5–10°C). The most popular and expensive travel time.
- March–April: Still good, but quickly getting hot (30–38°C). In April, rose bloom on Jebel Akhdar — a special experience. By the end of April, it becomes unpleasant in the desert.
Summer: May–September (North)
In Muscat and on the northern coast 45–50°C and extreme humidity (up to 90%). In the desert 48–52°C. Practically unbearable and not recommended for the north. Even locals flee to air-conditioned shopping malls.
Salalah: June–September (Khareef Season)
The big exception: While the rest of the peninsula glows, the Khareef monsoon brings cool 25°C, drizzle, and lush greenery to the south. Salalah is a summer insider tip — especially for Gulf state tourists escaping the heat.

💡 Tipp
November is the insider tip: The summer heat is over, the high season hasn't started yet, prices are moderate, and the weather is perfect. In February/March, it's a bit busier, but the temperatures in the desert are ideal for long hikes.
Month by Month: What to Expect
Each month has a different character in Oman — here is the detailed overview for your planning:
October
The insider tip for bargain hunters: The summer heat is just breaking, still 33–35°C on the coast, but bearable. Hotels start with off-season prices, the sights are empty. Perfect for Muscat and the coast. Already pleasant in the desert and on Jebel Shams. Whale shark season begins off the Daymaniyat Islands!
November
The best combination of weather and price. 28–30°C on the coast, perfect conditions in the desert and mountains. November 18 is National Day — festive atmosphere, illuminated buildings, but also higher hotel prices around this date. The high season doesn't start until mid-December. Turtle season in Ras al Jinz kicks off properly.
December–January
High season: Perfect weather (22–28°C), blue skies, cool nights in the desert and mountains (5–10°C on Jebel Shams!). Christmas and New Year are the most expensive weeks — hotels charge a 50–100% surcharge, popular desert camps are booked weeks in advance. Book in advance!
February–March
Still excellent weather, prices drop slightly from mid-February. In February, camel races and cultural events often take place. By the end of March, it gets warmer (30–35°C), but still good for hiking. Ideal time for Jebel Shams (milder temperatures than in summer) and long wadi tours.
April–May
The transition to heat. April is the last acceptable month for the north — particularly attractive for the rose bloom on Jebel Akhdar (unique!). Already 35–38°C in Muscat. In May, it becomes unbearable in the desert (40°C+). Only suitable for the coast and mountains. Hotels with off-season prices — bargain hunters take note.
June–September
Only Salalah! In the north, it is impossible with 42–50°C and stifling humidity. But in Salalah, the wonder of the Khareef monsoon begins: 25°C, green hills, waterfalls, misty forests — a completely different Oman. Gulf state tourists flock here by the thousands. Hotels in Salalah have high season prices in July/August. If you want to experience the monsoon, book 2–3 months in advance.
