Mértola★★
Mértola is the most astonishing small town in the Alentejo — and one of Portugal's most underrated attractions. Situated on a rocky outcrop above the confluence of the Rio Guadiana and Ribeira de Oeiras, Mértola is a living museum: The entire old town is classified as an open-air archaeological museum (Vila Museu), with excavation sites ranging from Roman times through the Islamic period to the Middle Ages.
The centerpiece is the Igreja Matriz — a church that is actually a mosque. As the only still recognizable former mosque in Portugal (built in the 12th century), it was converted into a Christian church after the Reconquista, but the Islamic architecture is unmistakable: the mihrab (prayer niche) in the wall, the horseshoe arches, the square floor plan. A fascinating testament to the 500-year Islamic presence in Portugal.
The Castelo from the 13th century towers over everything and offers a spectacular view over the Guadiana, which winds silver through the green landscape. Inside the castle, there is a small archaeological museum with Roman and Islamic finds.
Mértola is located in the Parque Natural do Vale do Guadiana — one of the wildest and least populated regions in Portugal. The Guadiana River winds through a rugged gorge landscape here, which explodes into a sea of wildflowers in spring (March–May). The region is one of the last refuges of the Iberian lynx in Portugal — since 2015, lynxes have been released here as part of a reintroduction program.
Practical note: Mértola is remote — 130 km southeast of Évora, 80 km north of the Algarve. There is no train connection. You need a car and should plan at least half a day. Those who stay overnight (e.g., at Casa de Mértola, from €55/night) will be rewarded with magical evening light over the Guadiana.
💡 Tipp
Mértola hosts the Festival Islâmico every two years (odd years) — a large festival celebrating the city's Islamic past, with music, food, crafts, and Arabic calligraphy from across the Mediterranean. About 30,000 visitors come — remarkable for a town with 7,000 inhabitants.
