Gaudí's garden city utopia sits atop the Carmel Hill and is a total work of art combining nature and architecture. Originally planned as an exclusive residential area for 60 families (of which only two houses were built), the park was opened to the public in 1926 and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.

The Monumental Zone (fee required) includes the most famous elements: the winding mosaic bench on the terrace with panoramic views over Barcelona and the sea — each section individually designed by Gaudí's collaborator Josep Maria Jujol with ceramic shards (Trencadís). Below, the Sala Hipòstila (Hypostyle Hall) with 86 Doric columns, originally intended as a market hall. The Dragon Fountain at the entrance with the colorful mosaic salamander (actually a newt) is Barcelona's most photographed motif.

The free part of the park is extensive and offers wonderful walking paths through Mediterranean vegetation with viewpoints over the city. Particularly beautiful: the Calvary Hill at the top with three stone crosses and a 360° panorama.

💡 Tipp

Arrive at opening at 9:30 a.m. or after 5:00 p.m. — it's crowded and hot at midday. The ascent from the city center is steep; take bus 24 or metro L3 to Vallcarca and follow the escalators. Once at the top, a detour to the "Turó de les Tres Creus" is worthwhile — the best viewpoint most tourists miss.
