La Rioja — Wine Region€€

La Rioja is Spain's most famous wine region — and one of the smallest autonomous communities in the country. On just 5,045 km², over 600 bodegas (wineries) are concentrated, producing the world-renowned Rioja wine. The landscape is spectacular: terraced vineyards, ochre hills, medieval monasteries, and in the background, the snow-capped Sierra de la Demanda.

The capital Logroño (150,000 inhabitants) is a hidden gem: Calle Laurel, also known as "Senda de los Elefantes" (Elephant Path) — because at the end of the bar tour, you stagger like an elephant — has the highest density of Pintxos bars per square meter in all of Spain.

💡 Tipp

The grape harvest (Vendimia) takes place from mid-September to mid-October — the best time to visit. Many bodegas offer special harvest experiences then. Outside the high season, wine tastings cost 8–15 € (with 3–4 wines), premium tours 20–35 €.

Top Wineries & Architectural Wine

★★★ Marqués de Riscal (Elciego)

Frank Gehry's second masterpiece after the Guggenheim: The Ciudad del Vino (City of Wine) is a hotel-winery-restaurant complex with undulating titanium plates in pink, gold, and silver. Tour with tasting from 18 €. The hotel (from 350 €/night) has a vinotherapy spa.

★★ Bodegas Ysios (Laguardia)

Winery designed by Santiago Calatrava — the wave-shaped facade of aluminum and cedar reflects the Sierra de Cantabria. Tour + tasting from 15 €. Reservation recommended.

★★ Vivanco — Museo de la Cultura del Vino (Briones)

The best wine museum in the world (awarded by the OIV). 4,000 m² exhibition on 8,000 years of wine history, with presses from Roman times, a corkscrew collection, and a walk-in Bacchus sculpture. Tasting afterwards.

10 € (museum + 1 glass of wine). Tue–Sun 10 am–6 pm (summer until 8 pm).

★ Haro

The wine center of Rioja Alta. In the Barrio de la Estación (station district), century-old bodegas line up: CVNE, López de Heredia, Muga, Roda. López de Heredia is a must — the oldest continuously operating bodega in Rioja (since 1877), with hand-painted barrels and a futuristic tasting pavilion by Zaha Hadid.

On June 29: Batalla del Vino (Wine Battle) — Thousands of people throw red wine at each other. Madness.
