Pucón & Villarrica Volcano★★★
Pucón — Chile's Adventure Capital
Pucón is a small town on the shore of Lago Villarrica, dominated by the perfectly cone-shaped, snow-capped, and active Villarrica Volcano (2,847 m). The combination of lake, volcano, and surrounding forests makes Pucón the adventure capital of Chile — here you can engage in more outdoor activities in a compact area than almost anywhere else on the continent.
Climbing Villarrica Volcano
The ascent of Villarrica Volcano is the ultimate Chile adventure. The tour starts early in the morning (6:00–7:00 am) and leads over glacier fields and snow to the smoking crater at 2,847 meters — where you can actually see (and smell!) glowing lava. The ascent takes 5–6 hours, requires crampons and an ice axe (provided), and good basic fitness.
The best part: The descent! You slide down the snow on your bottom — a natural slide that stretches for kilometers and delivers pure adrenaline. In 1–2 hours, you're down, which took 5 hours to climb.

💡 Tipp
The volcano ascent is only conducted under good weather conditions — CONAF closes the summit in case of poor visibility or strong winds. Plan at least 2–3 days in Pucón to catch a weather window. The Termas Geométricas are the perfect Plan B in bad weather — or the perfect reward after the climb.
