Discovering Santiago

Santiago de Chile is situated in a wide valley, nestled between the snow-capped Andes to the east and the coastal range to the west. On clear days — especially in winter — the sight of the 6,000-meter peaks behind the skyscrapers is breathtaking. In recent years, the seven-million metropolis has transformed from an often-overlooked stopover to one of South America's most exciting cities.

Santiago is safe, efficient, and surprisingly green. The metro is modern and affordable, the culinary scene is booming (Chile has more top restaurants than ever before), and neighborhoods like Bellavista, Lastarria, and Barrio Italia pulse with a creative energy reminiscent of Berlin or Barcelona.

Plan for 2–3 days in Santiago, plus a day each for Valparaíso and the wine region.

Orientation

Santiago is divided into distinct Barrios (neighborhoods):

  • Centro Histórico: Plaza de Armas, La Moneda, Cathedral, Mercado Central. The historic heart of the city with colonial architecture and bustling activity.
  • Barrio Bellavista: Santiago's bohemian district at the foot of Cerro San Cristóbal. Restaurants, bars, street art, Pablo Neruda's house "La Chascona," and vibrant nightlife.
  • Barrio Lastarria: The intellectual district with cafés, bookstores, the Museo de Bellas Artes, and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo. Small, pedestrian-friendly, and beautiful.
  • Barrio Italia: The up-and-coming hipster district with vintage shops, craft beer bars, galleries, and design studios.
  • Providencia & Las Condes: The modern business districts with shopping centers, international restaurants, and the Costanera Center (300 m, tallest skyscraper in South America).

💡 Tipp

The best way to experience Santiago: Visit Mercado Central in the morning, stroll through Lastarria and Bellavista in the afternoon, ride up Cerro San Cristóbal for sunset, and then drink Pisco Sour in Bellavista. The metro (Tarjeta Bip!, rechargeable) gets you everywhere quickly and affordably.
