Safety in Santiago

  • Safe neighborhoods: Providencia, Las Condes, Ñuñoa, Barrio Italia, Lastarria — you can move safely here at any time
  • Caution advised: Metro during peak hours (pickpockets!), Mercado Central (tourist magnet), Centro at night, Barrio Estación Central
  • At night: Uber is safe and affordable in Santiago — better than traditional taxis
  • Smog: Santiago has a smog problem, especially in winter (June–August). On days with "Alerta Ambiental" or "Pre-Emergencia," the air quality is poor — people with respiratory issues should stay indoors

Arrival & Airport

The Aeropuerto Internacional Arturo Merino Benítez (SCL) is located 17 km northwest of the center. Transfers:

  • Centropuerto/Turbus: Airport shuttle bus to Los Héroes and Estación Central. 1,900 CLP, every 10 min., 30–45 min.
  • Taxi: Fixed price to the center 20,000–25,000 CLP (20–25€)
  • Uber: 12,000–18,000 CLP (cheaper than a taxi, more convenient than a bus)
  • Rental car: All major providers at the airport. Not necessary for Santiago itself (metro suffices), but practical for day trips (Cajón del Maipo, wine region)
