Honfleur & Étretat★★★

Étretat, 76790 / Honfleur, 14600
Jardins d'Étretat: 11,50€, Musée Boudin: 8€

Honfleur is the most picturesque harbor town in Normandy — and all of France. The Vieux Bassin (Old Harbor) with its narrow, up to seven-story-high slate-roofed half-timbered houses, colorful fishing boats, and reflections in the calm water is the most painted motif in French art. Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet, Gustave Courbet, and Johan Barthold Jongkind found here the light that founded Impressionism.

The Musée Eugène Boudin displays works by the "father of Impressionism" born in Honfleur and his contemporaries — Monet, Dufy, Jongkind. Small but exquisite. The Église Sainte-Catherine (15th century) is unique in France: a completely wooden church built by ship carpenters, with a freestanding bell tower. The Jardin des Personnalités on the harbor basin's shore honors famous sons of the town with busts in a pretty garden (free).

Musée Boudin: €8. Wed–Mon 10 am–12 pm and 2 pm–6 pm (July/Aug continuously). Sainte-Catherine: free, daily.

Étretat

The chalk cliffs of Étretat are among the most iconic natural wonders of France — and Europe. The three massive arches (Porte d'Aval, Manneporte, Porte d'Amont) and the freestanding needle Aiguille (70 m high) rise from the turquoise English Channel like sculptures by a superhuman sculptor. Monet painted the scene over 80 times in different light.

Two cliff walks offer the best views:

Towards Porte d'Aval (left) — steep climb up stairs (15 min.) to the cliff above the most famous arch. From here, the classic view of the Aiguille and the Porte d'Aval. Continue to the Manneporte (30 min.).

Towards Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Garde (right) — slightly less crowded. From the small chapel on the cliff, a panoramic view over the entire rock formation and the beach. Return via the old customs path.

The beach of Étretat is made of pebbles (bathing shoes!), but at low tide offers natural rock pools for splashing. Bathing season June–September, water temperature 15–18°C.

The Jardins d'Étretat are a modern landscape garden on the cliff above the Porte d'Amont: topiary figures against the backdrop of the sea, temporary art installations, and one of the best viewpoints ever. Worth it even for non-garden enthusiasts.

Jardins d'Étretat: €11.50 (adults), €8 (children 4–14). Daily 10 am–7 pm (summer), shorter in winter. Cliffs and beach: free, 24/7.

💡 Tipp

Étretat is a day trip from Honfleur (1-hour drive) or Le Havre (30 min.). Arrive early in the morning or late afternoon — the cliffs get crowded at midday. The light is most dramatic in the morning (Porte d'Aval illuminated from above). Park in the lot above the town (€4/day) — the lower lot is full by 10 am in summer.
