La Bise & Etiquette

The Bise — the cheek kiss for greeting — is one of the most complex social rituals in the Western world. Two kisses? Three? Four? Start on the left or right? The answer depends on: region, relationship, gender, age, time of day, and personal preference. Welcome to France.

The basic rules: Among friends and acquaintances, one gives the Bise — women with each other, men and women, often men with each other (especially in the south). In a professional environment, a handshake suffices. Towards strangers: handshake. The number varies regionally: In Paris two, in Provence three, in parts of the Loire and Brittany four. When in doubt, follow the lead of the other person.

Since the Covid pandemic, the Bise has become less universal — some do it, some don't. A friendly "On se fait la bise?" clarifies the situation.

Other Etiquette Rules

  • "Bonjour" is mandatory — Entering a shop, doctor's office, restaurant, or even an elevator without saying "Bonjour" is considered rude. This is the most important rule of all
  • "S'il vous plaît" (Please) and "Merci" (Thank you) — are used constantly. Neglecting them is perceived as impolite
  • Formal address (Vouvoyer) — The French use formal address by default. Only when the other person offers "Tu" does one switch to informal address. In shops, restaurants, and with strangers: always "Vous"
  • Table manners — Hands on the table (not on the lap like in the USA), bread is broken (not cut), salad is folded with a knife (not cut), and the baguette is placed directly on the table (not on the plate)
  • Punctuality — In business life: absolutely. For private invitations: 15 minutes late is "le quart d'heure de politesse" — the polite quarter hour. Never arrive too early!

Achtung

Entering a shop without saying "Bonjour" is the most common mistake made by tourists — and the reason for many complaints about "unfriendly French people." Always say Bonjour first, then your request. The reaction will be completely different.
